President Obama Just Got His Very Own Holiday (https://www.democraticunderground.com/10029426524) (Washington Journal) Trump supporters in Illinois must be either simply fuming or else be planning moves to another state as their Republican Governor, Bruce Rauner, signed a bill on Friday declaring August 4th a new state holiday, Barack Obama Day. Senate Bill 55, designating the birthday of the former president a state holiday, was passed by both houses of the Illinois legislature without a single dissenting vote. The new holiday is “set apart to honor the 44th President of the United States of America who began his career serving the People of Illinois in both the Illinois State Senate and the United States Senate, and dedicated his life to protecting the rights of Americans and building bridges across communities.” The new holiday is strictly commemorative, meaning that banks will remain open, and no one will get any mandatory paid time-off from work, but instead it will be treated as a “day of acknowledgment and celebration.” Best wishes Mr. President Barack Obama!!

Just one more of many reasons not to live in Illinois.Beginning with the deaths of 6 children ... it took 12 years to convict Illinois Republican Gov. George Ryan and 75 others for a massive fraud, extortion and bribery scandal.

George Ryan

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Ryan

Ryan's political career was marred by a scandal called "Operation Safe Road," which involved the illegal sale of government licenses, contracts and leases by state employees during his prior service as Secretary of State.

In the wake of numerous convictions of his former aides, he chose not to run for reelection in 2002.

Seventy-nine former state officials, lobbyists, and others were charged in the investigation, and at least 76 were convicted.

The corruption scandal leading to Ryan's downfall began more than a decade earlier during a federal investigation into a deadly crash in Wisconsin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisconsin).

Six children from the Willis family of Chicago, Illinois (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago), were killed; their parents, Rev. Duane and Janet Willis, were severely burned.

The investigation revealed a scheme inside Ryan's Secretary of State's office in which unqualified truck drivers obtained licenses through bribes.

In March 2003, Scott Fawell (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Fawell), Ryan's former Chief of Staff and campaign manager, was convicted on federal charges of racketeering and fraud.
He was sentenced to six years and six months.

Former deputy campaign manager Richard Juliano (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Juliano) pleaded guilty to related charges and testified against Fawell at trial.

Roger Stanley, former Republican State Rep. who was hired by Ryan and testified against Fawell, pleaded guilty to wide-ranging corruption, admitting he paid kickbacks to win state contracts and campaign business, secretly mailed out vicious and false attacks on political opponents and helped obtain ghost-payrolling jobs.

Ryan

The investigation finally reached the former governor, and in December 2003, Ryan and lobbyist Lawrence Warner were named in a 22-count federal indictment.

The charges included racketeering, bribery, extortion, money laundering and tax fraud.

The indictment alleged that Ryan steered several state contracts to Warner and other friends; disbursed campaign funds to relatives and to pay personal expenses; and obstructed justice by attempting to end the state investigation of the license-for-bribes scandal.

He was charged with lying to investigators and accepting cash, gifts and loans in return for his official actions as governor.

In late 2005, the case went to trial.

Just one more of many reasons not to live in Illinois.

I thought about posting a thread of states I'd never live in at this point in my life.

Illinois is one of them by far. Add Colorado, Washington Oregon and California, New York.

States I would definitely live in are most non-coastal western states, Alaska and Maine.

The rest are iffy/maybe.

I often think he should take an entire month. Saved the Republican Party. Lost the House as early as 2010. Lost the Senate in 2014. Lost the Oval Office in 2016. The states he finished the Hillary Campaign in, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, both went President Trump. He was a one man Democrat Party wrecking ball on Republicans in 2008. But when that ball swung the other way....it bowled the Democrats off the political map.

The man I often thought might be a Republican mole. No one....could have done more political damage to the Democrat Party, We Republicans couldn't do it. This guy we owe our majorities to, thank God for him!
