President Trump was in an especially ornery mood after staff members gently suggested he refrain from injecting politics into day-to-day issues of governing after last month’s raucous rally in Arizona, and he responded by lashing out at the most senior aide in his presence.

It happened to be his new chief of staff, John F. Kelly.

Mr. Kelly, the former Marine general brought in five weeks ago as the successor to Reince Priebus, reacted calmly, but he later told other White House staff members that he had never been spoken to like that during 35 years of serving his country. In the future, he said, he would not abide such treatment, according to three people familiar with the exchange.

Any bets on how much longer he lasts?

It is more interesting to see the "media" make up stories about his leaving.

The Hill leans hard left.

They want Kelly to fail.

When he was hired I predicted to my family that he would either be fired quickly or act as a stabilizing force.

I don't trust the leaks from the White House, but assuming that Kelly is having to deal with Trump and his attitude, it is probably a sign he won't last long. Honestly, I thought the option of him being a stabilizing force was more likely due to the fact he's mostly respected, has as much experience as he does, and generally seems like a good influence.

No, they don't. Various columnists there can either lean left or right. This is from CBS. Remember, Trump has consistently praised all of his former staff right before he fired them:

President Trump tweeted his high regard Gen. John Kelly, his chief of staff, after the Washington Post published a story (https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/john-mccain-its-time-congress-returns-to-regular-order/2017/08/31/f62a3e0c-8cfb-11e7-8df5-c2e5cf46c1e2_story.html?utm_term=.4e7558b23760) reporting that there were simmering tensions between the two."General John Kelly is doing a great job as Chief of Staff!" Trump said in a series of Tweets Friday morning.

The White House is also pushing back on the Post's report, with a senior official telling CBS News that the story is "not true."
According to the Post, however, Mr. Trump is bristling at Kelly's way of doing things, which includes acting like a gatekeeper to a president who hadn't had one. "Trump appears to pine for the days when the Oval Office was a bustling hub of visitors and gossip, over which he presided as impresario," the paper reports.
The story says that some Trump friends have started calling Kelly "the church lady" due to his efforts to reign in the president. "He doesn't like how Kelly's handling him," a friend told the paper. "He's turning on people that are very close to him."
Yet in public, Mr. Trump has not been shy in lauding Kelly, and attempted to have the retired Army general join him on stage during his recent rally in Phoenix, Arizona. Kelly, however, demurred and stayed to the back of the stage.
Kelly, who took the job (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/john-kelly-new-white-house-chief-of-staff-replaces-reince-priebus/) in July after the resignation of Reince Preibus, has sought to create order in the chaotic White House. In doing so, he's attempted to make himself an intermediary between the president and some of his friends and advisers.
But when Kelly is not around, the Post reports, the president will still call around to seek counsel from friends and informal advisers, including departed White House chief strategist Steve Bannon.
"Donald Trump resists being handled," Roger Stone, another outside adviser of Mr. Trump, told the paper. "Nobody tells him who to see, who to listen to, what to read, what he can say."
Stone went on to say that Kelly would not be successful in trying to impose discipline on Mr. Trump.

Business Insider, though, has been fairly conservative.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly may be positioning himself to stand his ground against President Donald Trump's fiery temper, The New York Times reported (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/01/us/politics/john-kelly-trump.html?_r=0) on Friday. After staff members cautioned Trump to tone down his rhetoric following a raucous campaign rally in Phoenix, Arizona, last month, he reportedly lashed out at Kelly, who offered a coolheaded response.
Privately, The Times' Glenn Thrush and Maggie Haberman wrote, Kelly was incensed by Trump's bite, telling White House staff he had never been spoken to in that way during his 35 years of military service, according to three sources familiar with the talk.
The Times' sources also noted that Kelly said he would not condone the same treatment in the future.
After replacing former chief of staff Reince Priebus five weeks ago, Kelly immediately began regulating the White House, becoming an instrumental force in the dismissal of several controversial staffers, including former chief strategist Steve Bannon and former communications director Anthony Scaramucci.
