I never even knew there was a Columbus statue in San Antonio...

Protestors call for removal of local Christopher Columbus statue (https://www.ksat.com/news/protestors-call-for-removal-of-local-christopher-columbus-statue)

People holding signs and chanting said the holiday and statue represents oppression for Native Americans.

"We need to take these statues down because we don't need to be constantly reminded of our oppressors and the bad history so we need to take these statues down," Juan Aguirre, one of the people protesting, said.

Aguirre said people have been protesting the statue for years, and his next step is to speak with city council about taking it down.

...The Christopher Columbus Italian Society owns the statue, but the land belongs to the city.

The president of the organization told KSAT it's a free country and they won't step in unless the protestors deface the statue.

Heavy sigh..... when are people going to be more concerned about the important things in life? Is that too difficult?

Maybe I should go counterprotest. Wonder if they're violent.

Over Houston ways "Vandals splattered paint onto a bronze bust of Martin Luther King Jr. and a 7-foot-tall statue of Christopher Columbus in Houston as nationwide turmoil over historical statues spilled beyond the protests over Confederate monuments."

But get this: "The MLK statue in the historically black community of Sunnyside was found smeared with white paint early Thursday morning."

Wasn't it Columbus that opened America to eventually become America and then the US? Wasn't that a good thing, the fact that American become explored and we eventually matured into a country (of snowflakes). Wasn't that a good thing? Shouldn't he be remembered for that?

You have to take the good with the bad. You can't turn back time. Just move on.

Local news story on Spectrum added a bit on local Italians upset how insensitive the protest is to them.

From mySA: Indigenous Peoples Day? Italians say stick with Columbus (http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/texas/article/Indigenous-Peoples-Day-Italians-say-stick-with-12262824.php)

But the gesture to recognize indigenous people rather than the man who opened the Americas to European domination also has prompted howls of outrage from some Italian-Americans, who say eliminating their festival of ethnic pride is culturally insensitive, too.

"We had a very difficult time in this country for well over a hundred years," said Basil Russo, president of the Order Italian Sons and Daughters of America. "Columbus Day is a day that we've chosen to celebrate who we are. And we're entitled to do that just as they are entitled to celebrate who they are."

Columbus never interacted with North American Indians as far as I know. It should be the Caribbean people protesting. Thanks to the hurricane they have more pressing issues to deal with.

Why rethink? Why not pick another day?

And a better name: Indigenous Peoples Day is too multisyllabic and I'll bet many people scratch their head wonder who Indigenous is. :D
