The National Park Service has announced a proposal to more than double the peak-season entrance fees at the country's busiest national parks, including Shenandoah, Yosemite, Yellowstone and Grand Canyon.
The park service said Tuesday that it needs the revenue expected from the fees to address its nearly $12 billion backlog (https://www.nps.gov/aboutus/news/release.htm?id=1780) of deferred maintenance. But the announcement has been met with worries that higher prices will push the parks out of reach for many Americans.

"Targeted fee increases at some of our most-visited parks will help ensure that they are protected and preserved in perpetuity and that visitors enjoy a world-class experience that mirrors the amazing destinations they are visiting," Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke said in a statement (https://www.nps.gov/orgs/1207/10-24-2017-fee-changes-proposal.htm).

The rate hike would affect the 17 national parks that already drive the most revenue. Those sites, which stretch from Denali in Alaska to Acadia in Maine, generate 70 percent of all park entrance fees. Most national parks are free to enter: Of the 417 total NPS sites, only 118 charge admission fees.
The proposed rates (https://parkplanning.nps.gov/document.cfm?documentID=83652) would significantly increase the costs to enter the parks during their busiest months. Entry at these parks currently costs $25 or $30 per vehicle, no matter the season. Under the new rates, entrance would cost $75 per vehicle during a five-month peak season.
Per-person entry fees, $10-$15 at the current rate, would rise to $30 during peak season. The cost for an annual pass for access to all parks would remain unchanged at $80.

I don't have a problem with that.

Understand you can always get in parks without going through the main gate. (Which I don't do. I pay to get in).

Well yeah, every budget Trump offers dramatically slashes the NPS budget, this is an “oh shit” maneuver. T.R. is rolling in his grave.

Much of it should be privatized.

If you want to destroy it, sure.

Private interests would treat it better than government interests. In the west we would have less wild fires.

possum thinks an optimal solution would be fees that increase revenue for the parks...

... w/o being so high as to decrease visitation.

The present proposal to raise fees from $30 to $70...

... would be counterproductive to such a goal.

It would be better to have an more incremental increase now...

... than to raise fees so high as to dimish visitation, and thus, revenue to the parks.

You can walk into any National Park...I drive in and pay because the Rangers deserve their pay and all of the subcontractors do as well. I hope that makes me a rational American camper.

I guess the fee at our Grand Canyon is going to $70 according to TV news.

I read the reason for the needed increase is that they just dont have enough money for maintenance and other necessities. I have no idea what it costs to get into one of the parks

Umm, if the feds have to charge the owners that much to get in to their own property maybe they should sell some of that land!

Anything to pass costs on to the working folks... and not all fires are bad.

Fires can serve a useful purpose. But what we have been seeing the last several years are much worse due to mismanagement of the land.
