Trump's ambassador to the Netherlands got caught lying about the Dutch

by Amanda Erickson, Washington Post

A Dutch journalist just asked new U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra why he said there are “no go” areas in the Netherlands, where radical Muslims are setting cars and politicians on fire.

Hoekstra denied it, and called the claim “fake news.”

The reporter then showed Hoekstra a video clip of himself at a congressional hearing in 2015 saying: “The Islamic movement has now gotten to a point where they have put Europe into chaos. Chaos in the Netherlands, there are cars being burnt, there are politicians that are being burnt.”

“And yes, there are no-go zones in the Netherlands,” he added in the clip.

Then things got extremely weird.

When the reporter pressed, Hoekstra denied using the term “fake news,” which he’d uttered moments before.

“I didn’t call that fake news,” he said. “I didn’t use the words today. I don’t think I did.”

Hoekstra was being interviewed by reporter Wouter Zwart for current affairs program Nieuwsuur. The interview is not playing well in the Netherlands. (One sample headline: “The new Trump Ambassador to the Netherlands, Pete Hoekstra, lies about his own lies.”)

But the former congressman was always going to be a tough sell for one of Europe’s most liberal countries. Though Hoekstra was born in the Netherlands, his family immigrated to Michigan when we was a toddler. He served as a Republican congressman for a decade and a half, eventually chairing the House Intelligence Committee.

In that time, he adopted several positions that are at odds with core Dutch values. Hoekstra is opposed to same-sex marriage and gay rights. In Congress, he voted repeatedly to limit women’s rights to abortion. He supports the death penalty and has argued passionately that refugees are a threat to European security. Hoekstra has given several talks at the anti-Islam American Freedom Alliance, which has also hosted Dutch far right leader Geert Wilders. In 2015, Hoekstra blamed a “secret jihad” for the “chaos” in the Netherlands.

After Trump announced Hoekstra’s appointment, Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant observed that Trump “put a Dutchman in the Netherlands — but it is a Dutchman from the Netherlands of the ’50s.”

Of the appointment, liberal politician Sophie in ’t Veld said: “We are looking forward with interest to cooperating with Mr. Hoekstra. We will certainly remind him his roots lie in a country that values tolerance, equality, and inclusion. … We expect the representative of our friend and ally the United States to fully and wholly respect our values and to show that respect in all his acts and words.”

The comments you are trying to cite were from TWO YEARS BEFORE he was ambassador there, and reflect what the DUTCH THEMSELVES HAVE SAID:

Dutch anxiety over ‘Sharia triangle’ police no-go area in The HagueArea two kilometres from city centre has become ‘orthodox Muslim territory’ largely ignored by authorities

There have been calls for an urgent debate in the Dutch parliament about the integration of Muslim immigrants amid claims that one area of The Hague (https://www.irishtimes.com/topics/topics-7.1213540?article=true&tag_location=The+Hague), known locally as “the Sharia triangle”, is being run by a form of unofficial Sharia police.
The claims relate to the district of Schilderswijk, about two kilometres from the city centre, where an almost entirely Muslim population of some 5,000 people surrounds the El Islam mosque, fuelling criticism that the government has failed to ensure a proper ethnic mix in schools and local housing.

One recent investigation, in which local people were extensively interviewed, concluded that Schilderswijk had become “orthodox Muslim territory” which was now largely ignored by the city authorities, by politicians and even by the police, on the grounds that it had become self-regulating.

WTF DO YOU DELUDE THIS MEANS?

One recent investigation, in which local people were extensively interviewed, concluded that Schilderswijk had become “orthodox Muslim territory” which was now largely ignored by the city authorities, by politicians and even by the police, on the grounds that it had become self-regulating.
The investigation found that orthodox Muslims had become so dominant that they were dictating what people in the neighbourhood wore and how they behaved.
“The norms of the majority are beginning to take over,” it said.
In the case of women, dress was a particular issue. One woman told how her daughter had been approached and told her short skirt was inappropriate, while her son had been called a “kaffir” – a racist term formerly used in colonial South Africa to refer to a black person – for smoking.

Gosh, golly-gee. What does that mean? Der...

Grok, I hope you see, read and understand this even if it isn't in 7-point type and red, but...Bob is correct. The article you cited talks about some people being criticized for what they are wearing in that neighborhood, or for smoking or owning a dog. Nowhere in that article - or in any other legitimate source that I can find - is there any mention of a "no go" area, let alone cars and politicians being set on fire.

And please keep in mind that other members pointing out the factual or logical errors in your posts is not a reading comprehension problem on their part - it is a relevance and reality problem on yours.

Big colored fonts and insults are a poor substitute for having actual facts on your side, Grok. You are in serious need of not only obtaining a better understanding of what others post, but of being able to analyze what you, yourself, post, as well. Nothing in the big red quote you seem to have fallen in love with in any way indicates that the neighborhood described is a "no go" zone - presumably a place where non-Muslims are not permitted or are afraid to go to. Elsewhere in the same article, as I recall, there was mention of the level of crime in the area going down; perhaps that is why it is noted that "even...the police" were ignoring activities there - they have the luxury of doing so. As for the bit about vehicles and politicians being set on fire...we're still waiting for a link to any real world news stories about that happening in the Netherlands, aren't we?

Ignoring the facts presented in direct contradiction of one's asinine claims false claims of no "no go zones' in the Netherlands is not obscured by a laughably sophomoric attempt at trying to pretend that the exaggerated font used to draw attention to said facts being ignored somehow ,disqualifies the cited facts, fools only the FOOL trying that tactic, and its weak brained cohorts.

You read about a neighborhood where the authorities see their involvement to be largely unnecessary and you extrapolate from that that it is a "no go zone", where non-Muslims are afraid to travel. Whatever, Grok. I don't follow your alleged logic, but whatever makes you happy.

Speaking of unanswered questions...vehicles and politicians being set on fire?

And lest we forget, the initial story was how the ambassador said those things - whether or not he'd heard them from a reputable source - and then denied he'd said them. Called them "fake news". Then, minutes later, denied he'd said that.
