The U.S. may have come away with unexpected gold, but NBC was an unqualified failure at the Pyeongchang games.
Back in 2011, and again in 2014, NBC shelled out an unbelievable amount of money — a total of nearly $12 billion dollars — to host TV coverage of the Olympics for years to come. But after Pyeongchang, where Olympic viewership fell to an all-time low, it looks like the "peacock" may have made one of television history's worst investments.
According to CNN, viewership (http://money.cnn.com/2018/02/24/media/nbc-olympics-ratings-12-billion-rights/index.html) "for the current Olympics on NBC is down 24% compared to Sochi among viewers aged 18-49, the age demographic most coveted by advertisers," and even the Opening Ceremonies, which are typically the Games' biggest draw, were down more than 8% in viewership from the same event in Sochi.
Hollywood media-watcher Deadline reports that (https://deadline.com/2018/02/curling-gold-olympics-ratings-2018-low-pyeongchang-nbc-1202302121/) in some cases NBC experienced double-digit drops compared to just four years ago. Eleven percent fewer people watched NBC's coverage overall, but an average of 29% fewer viewers watched per day as compared to the same Olympic days in 2012.
Part of the problem, CNN contends (https://deadline.com/2018/02/curling-gold-olympics-ratings-2018-low-pyeongchang-nbc-1202302121/) is that NBC appears to have failed to notice that people enjoy watching their Olympics live and without additional content. Instead of tuning in to NBC's prime time coverage of the events, viewers preferred to watch their Olympic content online; 13.9 million unique viewers used NBC's digital live stream to get their Olympics fix.
It also didn't help that the United States had an un-naturally poor performance in 2016 Games, and that, because of a time difference with Korea, most Olympic events took place while American viewers were asleep.
The only exception to NBC's abysmal Olympic coverage came during Friday's landmark U.S. victory in men's curling: the network posted one of it's best overnight ratings gets ever, as people tuned in to watch America win gold in the obscure sport between 1:30 and 3:00 a.m. EST.
Instead of maximizing the effectiveness of their live coverage, though, NBC maximized return on investment for advertisers. The athlete profiles and commercial tie-ins happen because NBC has sold millions in advertising and "retransmission fees" to corporate sponsors, so that, even as viewership declines, the network stands to make a potential six-digit Olympic profit.
That profit, though, hinges on whether NBC attracted the right number of viewers to satisfy their contracts with advertisers. If they didn't (and things look a bit dire), NBC will have to offer "make good" apologies to companies like Procter & Gamble and Coca-Cola, and give them free advertising on other shows that have better ratings — and possibly reconsider their coverage strategy for the next Olympic Games.

Making it the "It's All About the Gayness of a Mediocre Figure Skater Olympics" didn't help , either.

The time shift is probably the largest factor. Agreed, people like live shows. Not many people who miss a football game and, upon hearing the winner, go home to watch it on DVR.

There is almost ALWAYS a time shift in Olympic coverage. This year is not different.

The key is the amount of time shift, not that there is a time shift.

Same as when they were in Seoul, Japan, and China...all of which had FAR GREATER viewerships.

Americans are sick of EVERYTHING being politicized and especially sick of the LGBT Attack Squad's desperate need to make their genitalia preferences " important".

The Gay Blades got more individual coverage than nearly ALL of our gold medalists = total bullshit.

We, the People, are tired of the bullshit.

I wouldn't blame the lack of viewership on the Gay Blade tempest in a tea pot. I didn't watch them either and it wasn't because of that flamer.

All other things being equal, (which they are, other than our weak team), that is the ONLY BIG DIFFERENCE this year. For the 1st week of the games, it was 50/50 you'd be exposed to that self-centered imbecile at some point while trying to watch hockey, etc.

NBC tried to make the Gay Blades the LEAD STORY of these Olympics, and pissed in their own Wheaties....

Well, as corporations go, if they lost billions, I'm sure the shareholders will want some heads on the table....and they probably don't give a shit if they are gay or straight heads.

Not only did you have the Fruit Cup, but also they tried to make it anti Trump and political.
I wanted to watch them, I love the Olympics but not at that price. I just went to looking at the results

Shame for me, but I am not being exposed to that crap

NEW YORK — NBC can count on making a profit for its 18 days of telecasting the Winter Olympics from South Korea. The network’s ratings started strong and slipped a bit as the games went on, and executives say it will end up about where they expected.
Young viewers are flocking to their devices to watch the games, a trend that’s accelerating.

Despite lower ratings compared to the Sochi games four years ago, NBC’s Olympics coverage routinely drew more viewers than ABC, CBS and Fox combined each night.
NBC broke in a new host with Mike Tirico, and the games increased the star power of analysts such as Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski.
Others didn’t make out as well, including skiing analyst Bode Miller.
————
Counting up the medals, Pyeongchang was a lackluster Olympics for the U.S. team, and the post-mortems will soon begin about what went right and wrong. It’s worth taking the same look at NBC’s performance, because the network is locked into showing Olympic games every two years through 2032.
NBC tried some new things, and new people, to supplement a blueprint it has followed for several years.

THE BOTTOM LINEThe network started strong in the ratings, and has faded in the homestretch in part, executives believe, because more people became absorbed in the news following the Florida school shooting. The company will turn a profit, and said it will hit the ratings guarantees it promised to advertisers, an important financial barometer.
Through Thursday, NBC had averaged 20.6 million viewers in prime time for the network, the NBCSN cable network and streaming services. That’s down 8 percent from the Sochi Olympics in 2014, when the broadcast network was the only prime-time option (viewership on NBC alone is down 18 percent).
Young viewers are slipping away faster, and a Seton Hall University poll found people aged 18-to-29 were nearly as likely to stream the Olympics on their devices as watch on TV.
No one likes to see ratings go down. But because of how streaming services have changed viewing behavior since 2014, programs with a bigger audience than four years ago are rare. For two weeks, NBC routinely had more viewers than ABC, CBS and Fox combined.
“We were a little bit surprised that it started out as strong as it did,” said Mark Lazarus, chairman of the NBC Sports Group. “It will end up about where we thought it would.”

Of course, anyone who disagrees with the Gaystapo must have something wrong with them.

It is the attention-whore Rippon , who , obviously felt "rejected and ignored as a child". And now, he thinks it's some great revelation that many male figure skaters are homosexuals, and that we give a shit about his hissy fit.

I have no phobia about homos; I just do not CARE about their craven need to Drama Queen their genitalia preferences whenever a camera is around; that is what is disgusting.

You didn't see the men's curling team (GOLD MEDALISTS) proclaiming their love OF PUSSY to the world, did you? Only gays have their entire lives based on their genitalia preferences.

We DON'T GIVE A FUCK about Rippon, or his self-centered bullshit; maybe he should spent more time working on his SKATING, instead of his own-way , "feud" with the Vice President.

The self-absorbed jackass finished NOWHERE NEAR THE PODIUM.

"The network started strong" and then Americans had their fill of the Weak-skating Wuss, and tuned out , after being BOMBARDED with his bullshit the entire 1st week of the games.
If the idiots at NBC keep deluding that Americans watch the Olympics, (or any sporting event) , are seeking to be lectured by mincing girlyboys, they will continue to see crappy numbers.

As for this year's Homotopia Programming= WORST RATED OLYMPICS EVER. As in EVER.

Not just me:

Today in Conservative Media: Dear Adam Rippon: "You're Gay. Get Over It."

Hmmmm.....spends $12B, makes $250M. Still a big profit plus they have bragging rights albeit, as the link below shows, it's a big risk.
