A bloc of Senate Republicans is readying legislation to halt Donald Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs, in the most provocative step yet taken to thwart the president on trade.

GOP leaders have spent this week urging Trump to reconsider his tariff plan, warning (https://www.politico.com/story/2018/03/05/trump-tariffs-republican-response-436382)
of a snowballing trade war that could choke off the economic benefits of the tax cuts they are touting on the campaign trail. While their efforts may have succeeded in narrowing the tariffs' impact, Trump is pressing ahead — leaving Republicans pondering how to check the leader of their own party.

Senate Republicans discussed the matter in depth on Thursday, just hours before Trump announced he would go through with his crackdown on imported metals. And they are gearing up for an open clash with Trump over economic policy, with Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) telling reporters that he will introduce legislation to block the tariffs.

It should be interesting to see if the GOP can develop a veto-proof plan.

If they just give this a little time, they will find that we can get a long term trade deal that will allow USA companies to compete.

it is likely that Democrats will side with the GOP on this not because they are against tariffs but because of TDS

Perhaps. So far three or four Dems have voiced support for the tariffs. Who even knows how the House will respond.

Traditionally Democrats support this kind of policy. I suspect that more than three or four support it, but opposition to anything Trump is the stronger force. At least until they are forced to go on record.

Trump announced hes backing off Steel and aluminum tariffs.

How do the people that are against all tariffs quantify the trade deficit of just china with us. Other countries have large trade deficits also.

That by the way is the reason the gop is against it, companies that are in china want no tariffs coming back into the country. I have something for them its called a great big FU if you dont like the tariffs come back to the USA and create some jobs for americans instead of communist chinese

Thats possible, I really dont know a whole lot about the mechanics and impact of tariffs etc
I do know our trade deficit with china is ridiculous and its mostly american companies bringing their chinese made products back here tariff free.

On the first, if they need help to compete then we're betting on the wrong horse.

On the second, agree.

I doubt that the current crop of Republicans would attempt to block Trump’s new tariffs. That would take a set of balls and that’s something they lack. Especially senate Republicans.
