Truancy would be an unexcused absence. Unless the school gave the kids permission to skip class to attend, they should be punished.

The school does not have to give permission, the parents can give the permission. The school only acts for the parents while the child is there. That's why kids are allowed to be homeschooled.

I don't believe that you can sue a school that suspends you for truancy... especially since truancy is against the law. The exception being for the kids that have notes from their parents excusing them.
