The teachers in Newtown, Connecticut who shielded their students from bullets with their own bodies were members of Local 1727 of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO.


Lauren Rousseau, 30, had started a job as a full-time teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School this fall. She was killed in the Dec. 14 shooting at the school.


Victoria Soto, a 27-year-old teacher, was killed in the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Her cousin, Jim Wiltsie, told ABC that Soto, a teacher, died while shielding her young students from the gunman, according to the AP.


School psychologist Mary Sherlach, 56, was killed during an attempt to stop gunman Adam Lanza during the Dec. 14 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Sherlach and school principal Dawn Hochsprung reportedly both lunged at Lanza in an attempt to protect the school's students and teachers. Both Sherlach and Hochsprung were killed.


Sandy Hook Elementary School Principal Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, 47, was killed as she, along with school psychologist Mary Sherlach, attempted to overtake gunman Adam Lanza during the Dec. 14 mass shooting at the school. Hochsprung and Sherlach reportedly both lunged at Lanza in an effort to defend the students and teachers at the school. Both women were killed.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire community in the wake of this terrible tragedy. We will be working closely to help the students, teachers, administrators and their families in Newtown as they recover from this tragedy.


We credit the teachers, staff and administrators for reacting immediately to protect the children.


Our thanks go out to all of their first responders for their effort to ensure the safety of all the students and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

You still conveniently neglet to acknowledge that they are prevented, by law, from being armed in these "Gun Free Zones". So, how many lives did your "Gun Free Zones" save? I know it's tough for liberals to understand but not all union members are union thugs. All union thugs are union members, though. If they weren't in a union, they'd be in jail. And, a decent person who is forced to join a union by union thugs should not be blamed for the actions of union thugs and goons. Similarly, the union thugs and goons should not be praised for the actions of good teachers.
