The process is simple and well established; stand up at a podium with one's wife standing nearby and apologize. Give a mea culpa, state how one has changed, apologize to anyone who was harmed and move forward. Trump's refusal to even admit he had an affair(s) is what is driving the news cycle. It's He said/She said every fucking day. Trump should have put this to bed well before the election. When it came to light after the election he had another opportunity. Instead, he put the entire thing into low orbit by denying, denying, denying and then counter-accusing with accusations of lies and whores himself or through others.

He can still salvage this with a mea culpa, but it seems his nature is to never, ever apologize and always blame others for his problems.
