Certainly, these two are amongst the most commonly cited for gun advocates in terms of country that is safe (relatively any, in Israel's case especially), and has pretty high gun ownership. (though it should be noted, that these two place's ownership is still significantly lower than the US DESPITE the fact that in Swiss they basically give you a gun.)

So what is it that these two places have that the US don't?

Mandatory Draft.

Since the founding father's ideal is so very important to the conservatives, and even the liberals acknowledge that a full gun ban is not gonna happen, how about we revive the old militia system then, where every healthy adult male must serve in the local militia (unless they are serving in other branches of the military). from age 20-40 (ish) . they must report for training every year, and once every few year must do some real service time as well.

This is essentially the Swiss model (the Israeli are even more rigorious due to obvious needs) . and I think it actually make sense for several reason.

A. Social bonds : meeting a lot of other similar aged folks from different walks of life is usually helpful.

B. Discipline: obvious

C. Sense of responsibility.

D. potentially lower defense spending. (this is true in reality, most country that switched off conscription saw a pretty severe hike in defense cost).

And, it is much closer to the America of the 18th century.
