SANTA FE, Texas (AP) — Houston-area media citing unnamed law enforcement officials are reporting that there are fatalities following a shooting at a local high school Friday morning.
Television station KHOU and the Houston Chronicle are citing unnamed federal, county and police officials following the shooting at Santa Fe High School, which went on lockdown around 8 a.m. The Associated Press has not been able to confirm the reports.
The school district has confirmed an unspecified number of injuries but said it wouldn’t immediately release further details. Assistant Principal Cris Richardson said a suspect “has been arrested and secured.”

“We hope the worst is over and I really can’t say any more about that because it would be pure speculation,” Richardson told media outlets at the scene.
School officials said law enforcement officers were working to secure the building “and initiate all emergency management protocols to release and move students to another location.” Students

Several students slain in Santa Fe school shooting...
Up to 10 dead in Texas school shooting
18 May`18 - A 17-year-old student was held after the attack, and explosive devices were found at the school.

Ten people have been killed and 10 others are injured after a shooting by a student at a Texas high school, says the state governor. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez told reporters the majority of the dead at Santa Fe High School were students. The suspect in custody has been identified as 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, according to CBS News. Police said explosive devices were found at the school, 40 miles (65km) south of Houston, and off-campus. Santa Fe Police Chief Jeff Powell said: "There have been explosive devices found inside the high school, and in the surrounding areas adjacent to the high school."

The high school is about 40 miles south of Houston

He advised residents to be aware of any suspicious objects they find. "Do not touch any items that look out of place," he said, warning residents to immediately call police. Santa Fe school police officer John Barnes has been named among the injured. Mr Barnes is currently in critical condition and undergoing surgery, according to local media. Two hospitals south of Houston said they had received nine patients from the school shooting. Clear Lake Regional Medical Center said it admitted seven, and Mainland Medical Center received two.

How the attack unfolded

Several students described hearing a fire alarm go off shortly before 08:00 local time. A student told local network KHOU-11 that a teacher who realised what was happening "ran out of the classroom and he pulled the fire alarm" to "get the rest of the school out". One witness told KTRK-TV the shooting happened in her art class, and that one of the victims was a girl. "There was someone that walked in with a shotgun and started shooting," the student said, "and this girl got shot in the leg." She said that she did not get a look at the shooter, because she ran to hide.

The 17-year-old suspect, Dimitrios Pagourtzis

Police have yet to confirm what type of firearm was used in the attack. One 10th grader told networks she had an asthma attack while hiding in the woods. News helicopters filmed students emptying their backpacks in front of armed officers in a field outside the school. A bomb squad was at the scene, and several helicopter ambulances flew victims to hospital. Federal officials with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are helping the investigation.

What's the reaction been? (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-44173954)

Multiple Fatalities in Texas School Shooting
May 18, 2018 - A suspect was taken into custody Friday morning after opening fire on students in Santa Fe.

Sheriff Ed Gonzales with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office told reporters that at least eight people are confirmed dead at Santa Fe High School. He said a second person of interest was also taken into custody for questioning. Both people arrested are students, Gonzales said. A law enforcement officer was reportedly among the injured.

A suspect was taken into custody Friday morning after opening fire on students at Santa Fe High School.

The suspect’s arrest was confirmed by assistant principal at Santa Fe High School, Cris Richardson. “We did have an active shooter in the building and that person has been arrested and secured,” she told NBC News. A spokesman at the University of Texas Medical Branch said they are treating three victims of the shooting, according to KHOU-TV. The spokesman said one victim, an adult male, is in surgery. Another victim is in the ER. One of the victims is a minor. The conditions of all three victims are unknown.

Police were called to the school shortly before 8 a.m. Friday after shots were fired. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms also responded to the scene. A student at the high school, Leila Butler, told KTRK-TV that fire alarms went off around 7:45 a.m. and that students exited their classrooms. She said some students heard gunshots and that she and her classmates and teachers are sheltering in place. Some students were directed to exit the school and were patted down by officers, according to live footage from the station. A nearby school district, Dickinson ISD, said it is taking precautionary measures and not letting students outside of the buildings.

Republican Greg Abbott said Friday that the suspect “has information contained in journals on his computer, in his cellphone that ... said ... not only did he want to commit the shooting but he wanted to commit suicide after the shooting.”
Abbott added that the suspect gave himself up to authorities, saying he “didn’t have the courage” to take his own life.
Dimitrios Pagourtzis has been charged with capital murder in the Friday morning shooting that killed 10 people and wounded 10 others in Santa Fe, near Houston and Galveston.

As I understand it, the NRA was established to promote marksmanship after the Civil War ended. It later supported the ban on fully-automatic rifles in 1934. It has also sponsored hunting-safety classes. Now the NRA is about owning-any-firearm-we-want-to-with-no-restrictions. Any legislation to regulate firearms must come from those who “hate individual liberty.” What happened?
Recently, the leader of the NRA, Wayne LaPierre spoke at CPAC, and warned everyone there that the USA was in danger of a “socialist takeover” following calls for tighter gun laws after the latest school shooting in Florida. He said “Their goal is to eliminate the Second Amendment and firearms freedom so they can eliminate all our freedoms.” He specifically named George Soros, Michael Bloomberg, and Tom Steyer, all of them Jewish billionaires, as behind this effort.

If this kind of talk, following Donald Trump’s war on the mainstream media doesn’t scare you, it should.
Government is not something to be feared and opposed with weapons. The dead have no liberty. Government should be shaped by the people using the rule of law, with a free and independent press, and a free and fair vote, without suppression.

Then what's wrong with legislation that would require the purchaser of a weapon to be sponsored by two people that must accompany him/her when the weapon is acquired? Then what's wrong with legislation that would require the purchaser of a weapon to be sponsored by two people that must accompany him/her when the weapon is acquired? With them signing for the integrity of the buyer with the understanding that if that buyer uses it for illegal purposes, the signatories would be held jointly responsible.
Would you sponsor a buyer on those terms?

Do you think someone should have two sponsors to write a book, publish a newspaper article, make a speech in public, worship at a place of his choice, protest against the government, or hold a peaceable assembly?

Biden, who is leading a push for President Barack Obama's gun control proposals, made the remark during a question-and-answer session on Facebook on Tuesday.
The vice-president has not one but two shotguns, which he says he keeps in a locked cabinet at his house in his home state of Delaware, and he has given his wife, Jill, explicit instructions on how to deal with any would-be intruder.
"We live in an area that's wooded and secluded," Biden said. "I said, 'Jill, if there's ever a problem, just walk out on the balcony here ... put that double-barrelled shotgun and fire two blasts outside the house.'
"I promise you, whoever's coming in is not going to," Biden said. "You don't need an AR-15 [assault rifle]. It's harder to aim. It's harder to use. And in fact, you don't need 30 rounds to protect yourself.

Texas school shooting: Arm teachers to stop gunmen...
:cool2:
Texas school shooting: Arm teachers to stop gunmen, official says
20 May 2018 - Arming more teachers could help tackle gunmen targeting students if there were "four to five guns to one", a senior Texan official has said.

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick was speaking two days after 10 people were killed at the Santa Fe High School, which had an armed guard. He had previously said schools had "too many entrances and too many exits" and their design should be reconsidered. The proposal to arm teachers is not a new idea. After a 14 February school shooting in Florida, US President Donald Trump suggested giving teachers a bonus if they carried guns. But he clarified via Twitter that "only the best 20% of teachers" - those with military backgrounds or special training - should be allowed guns.

Dan Patrick believes gun control would endanger more people

Mr Patrick, a Republican, told CNN that the best way to stop a gunman was "with a gun". "But even better than that is four to five guns to one," he said. Hours earlier, the police chief of neighbouring Houston said he had hit "rock bottom" over failure to enact gun reforms. Chief Art Acevedo wrote on Facebook that he had "shed tears of sadness, pain and anger" over the shooting. The shooting was the latest in a series of deadly incidents across the US that have reignited debate about gun control.

What happened in the latest school shooting?

Police now say eight students and two teachers were killed when another student opened fire in an art class shortly before 08:00 (13:00 GMT) on Friday at the Santa Fe High School. Thirteen others were wounded in the attack, with two in critical condition. Among the dead are a Pakistani exchange student and a substitute teacher. Dimitrios Pagourtzis, 17, has been charged with murder after surrendering to police. He later admitted "to shooting multiple people". He allegedly used a shotgun and a revolver taken from his father, who legally owned the weapons.

It was the fourth deadliest shooting at a US school in modern history, and the deadliest since a student opened fire in February at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 people. The Florida attack spawned a nationwide youth-led campaign for gun control, and a series of proposed changes, including moves to ban so-called bump stocks used in last year's Las Vegas shooting that killed 58 concert-goers.

Houston Police Chief Says He's Sick Of Inaction On Gun Control
May 19, 2018 - Following another school shooting, this one leaving 10 dead and 13 injured in Texas, Houston’s police chief is calling out elected officials for their failure to protect the children they claim to hold so dear.

Police Chief Art Acevedo posted a pained message on Facebook after Friday’s shooting in the nearby town of Santa Fe, in which a 17-year-old student at Santa Fe High School gunned down his classmates (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/santa-fe-texas-high-school-shooting_us_5afecea3e4b0463cdba128a5) and a teacher.

No one ― not even the terrified kids themselves (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/santa-fe-high-shooting-student-not-surprised_us_5aff08fce4b0463cdba18fbd) ― seemed to be all that surprised, with one student telling the local news she felt “eventually it was going to happen here too.” Acevedo said he has had enough inaction when it comes to protecting children. “Today I spent the day dealing with another mass shooting of children and a responding police officer who is clinging to life,” the police chief wrote Friday. “I’m not ashamed to admit I’ve shed tears of sadness, pain and anger.”

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo, Mayor Sylvester Turner, U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and student organizers at Houston's March for Our Lives rally on March 24.

He had a message to those who would choose their guns over the safety of kids. “I know some have strong feelings about gun rights, but I want you to know I’ve hit rock bottom and I am not interested in your views as it pertains to this issue,” he said.

I could support a reasonable plan to arm teachers so long as it was voluntary and the teachers were competent to handle firearms. But I think Resource Officers / police at schools would be more effective. You could also have classroom doors that don't open from the outside without a security measure. So if a student on prescription anti-depression medication goes full out homicidal, he couldn't gain access to a classroom while class was in session.

The problem with using a SRO is that he can only be in one place at a time. In our local school district, for example, there is one SRO who has to cover 4 different campuses, all in different parts of town. That gives him at best, a 1 in 4 chance of being on the grounds of a particular school in the event of an active shooter incident. Arming volunteer teachers is not only a more effective method of providing coverage, it is also much more cost effective. If you could arm, say... 10 teachers per school, that would be the equivalent of 40 SROs.

Of course, the best solution is a combination of active and passive defensive measures. Armed personnel on campus and strict access control. Keep the shooter from getting on campus in the first place or making sure he can't get on campus with the weapons he needs to carry out his act would greatly reduce the risk of armed personnel ever being required to respond in the first place. There should still be armed personnel available in case someone manages to slip in, but the odds of that happening can be greatly reduced with proper and relatively simple planning.
