Rep. Tom Garrett (R-Va.) said Monday that he has a drinking problem and will not seek reelection in November — a decision that came amid mounting scrutiny into his handling of his congressional office.
The 46-year-old Garrett was the subject of a POLITICO report (https://www.politico.com/story/2018/05/25/tom-garrett-staff-servants-608665) on Friday alleging that the congressman and his wife, Flanna, had used official staff to run errands and take care of their dog. In his Monday statement, he called the allegations “a series of half-truths and whole lies.”

Recovering people are encouraged to live an honest lifestyle so politics will be no place for him once he sobers up.

Part of the 12 step program, is to make 'amends' to everyone you've done wrong....that could take a while. (Since he is a politician, the list could be quite long.)

Unfortunately, people with addiction issues often relapse. I would never vote for a candidate who previously had a drug or alcohol problem unless they were like 20 plus years sober. Even then I would worry about the stress and how it might cause a person to revert back to their poor coping mechanism.
