The British took a serious beating here weeks after a truce had been signed. These were veteran troops from the Iberian Peninsula. Tragic waste. The Anglo-Irish commander of the British force, Sir Edward Pakenham, ordered a frontal assault on strongly fortified positions. Not a good idea even in those days. Pakenham was wounded by grapeshot three times and died on the field.
