An interesting skirmish during the the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. This desperate defense of a colonial outpost evokes images of the Victorian era...

The Battle for Hill 3234 was a successful defensive battle fought by the 345th Independent Guards Airborne Regiment (http://thepoliticalforums.com/wiki/345th_Independent_Guards_Airborne_Regiment), Soviet Airborne Troops (http://thepoliticalforums.com/wiki/Soviet_Airborne_Troops), in Afghanistan (http://thepoliticalforums.com/wiki/Afghanistan) against a force of 200 to 250 Mujahideen rebels. Two of the soldiers killed, Vyacheslav Alexandrovich Alexandrov (http://thepoliticalforums.com/wiki/Vyacheslav_Alexandrovich_Alexandrov) and Andrey Alexandrovich Melnikov (http://thepoliticalforums.com/wiki/Andrey_Alexandrovich_Melnikov), were posthumously awarded the Gold Star of the Hero of the Soviet Union (http://thepoliticalforums.com/wiki/Hero_of_the_Soviet_Union). All of the paratroopers in this battle were given the Order of the Red Banner (http://thepoliticalforums.com/wiki/Order_of_the_Red_Banner) and Order of the Red Star (http://thepoliticalforums.com/wiki/Order_of_the_Red_Star).[ (http://thepoliticalforums.com/#cite_note-Oliynik-1)

What about the speculation that they were funded partly by the US and perhaps in part were made up US Special Forces .

Nothing like giving every perspective

According to the Soviet estimates, the Mujahideen lost over 200 men. The Mujahideen wore black uniforms with rectangular black-yellow-red stripes. It was claimed by at least two sources that the mujahideen were actually members of the Special Services Group (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Services_Group), a commando unit of the Pakistan Army (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pakistan_Army).Wiki .

Do you think that is a revelation, Cary? We were fighting a proxy war in Afghanistan. Do you really think it was my intention to mock the Soviet military?

Why try and give answers to un-raised questions . This has the hall mark of harassment and Trolling . I hope you can conduct yourself properly in further posts .

Why you think there is a need to raise chunks of Wiki as a Topic is beyond me . However , for your education , the US was not fighting any sort of war in Afghanistan in 1987 . That it was supplying the Mujahideen secretly with money/men is another Topic .
As for me guessing your motivations toward anything -------- why ask me ? I doubt you know yourself , but , regardless , I doubt I could find any reasons that throw you in a sensible light .

Funding the Mujahideen ("secretly" or not) made it a proxy war. You know about the Cold War, right? Do you know what a proxy war is, Cary? Maybe Wiki can help yo?
