my Grandfather on my moms side used the word a lot to describe soups and stews.
basically you took what you have and mix it in a pot.
I want to share one of my versions of it
1 can of diced tomatoes , 1 small can of tomato sauce one box of chicken broth 1 chopped onion paprika garlic course ground pepper tri color pink salt and a bit of smoked salt a lttle pasta I perfer the kind that looks like grains of rice or you can add rice
while you bring that to a boil cook up a lb of chicken and 1/2 mild Italian sausage the ground type fry them in olive oil . after you cut the chicken and sausage up into small bit sized add to the pot let it all cook together for 1/2 hours or so. I add a bag of gumbo frozen veggies to it and let cook about 10 min.
you can add or take away what ever you want any kind of meat or veggie I like to ass carrots and spinich . its just a way of using what ever you got to make a meal . poor folk food old farmers food what ever
