While it's true that Francis lives a very sheltered, privileged life now, he hasn't always done so. He is very familiar with how "the other half" lives. Even so, this particular reflection seems to be addressed primarily to folks who do have at least some degree of physical and financial comfort...talking about "fine glassware", perfume and sport shoes. Obviously, not all Catholics are poor, and Francis is someone who understands that those who are relatively well off need the Church's comforts and instruction as much as anyone does.

If I had to sum up the above message in one phrase, it would be something that I heard many years ago: "Happiness is not a destination, but a way of traveling."

I miss JP2. If I remember correctly, Pope Francis has eschewed the trappings of his office and lives in an apartment attached to the Vatican.
