    Raw Water?

Don't seem like a good idea to me.

Dysentery anyone? No? Well how about some Cholera instead?

Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say water is filtered for a reason – and warn untreated water may contain bacteria, viruses and parasites – no matter how clean it looks. "If you're not filtering it, if you're not disinfecting it then you are creating a risk for yourself or anybody you give the water to of diseases and other illnesses that can come from the water," said Vincent Hill, chief of the CDC Waterborne Disease Prevention branch.
And the price! $30 a gallon?

    Insane!

I have a well as do 85% of the people in my community (there is no government sponsored water available). So, I would think it would depend on where the water originated.

As for the $30.00 a gallon, yes that is excessive and maybe there should be a law putting a price cap on this.

Someone is cashing in on the gullibility of the masses. A well has a natural filter depending the on the depth, location, and amount of sediment it filters through, but surface water is susceptible to what is upstream. I say let darwin run its' course.
“Conscientiously believing that the proper condition of the negro is slavery, or a complete subjection to the white man, and entertaining the belief that the day is not distant when the old Union will be restored with slavery nationally declared to be the proper condition of all of African descent, and in view of the future harmony and progress of all the States of America, I have been induced to issue this address, so that there may be no misunderstanding in the future”

I wouldn't think it was downhill from a septic tank. Dirt filters a good bit and, unless you are dumping raw sewage near the well, it should be safe.

When I was younger and Colorado wasn't overrun with too many people I used to drink directly from mountain springs and rivers. Cold and good! I would bet that in the future we'll develop filters that remove only the "bad" stuff while leaving the healthy minerals intact. To manufacture high end pharmaceuticals we filtered and processed water so pure that it was actually toxic to drink. LEPW (low endotoxin purified water.)

Not quite that simple, but generally it is safe if the well is tested to be safe periodically. The depth of the well matters a lot, but the water doesn't stop at the edge of one's property line so it is not unheard of for people's wells to be contaminated by others. It is why you can kiss your life good bye if you ever are responsible for cross contaminating fresh water wells by hitting a saline pocket while drilling. The government will destroy you.
