Food policy experts and human resource administrators are quick to point out that the overwhelming majority of the record 38 million Americans now using food stamps are their traditional recipients: the working poor, the elderly and single parents on welfare.

But they also note that recent changes made to the program as part of last year’s stimulus package, which relaxed the restrictions on able-bodied adults without dependents to collect food stamps, have made some young singles around the country eligible for the first time.

“There are many 20-somethings from educated families who go through a period of unemployment and live very frugally, maybe even technically in poverty, who now qualify,” said Parke Wilde, a food economist at Tufts University who has written extensively about food stamp usage and policy.

The increase in food stamp use among this demographic is hard to measure, as they represent a cross section of characteristics not specifically tracked by the Agriculture Department, which administers the program.
    Hummm ... interesting

It's the lifestyle of the voluntary poor and their only problem is, "Is that all?"

Bread and circuses. Food stamp abuse, paid government "contractors" who spend their days on message boards spamming and heckling, all just different versions of the Roman street mob.

If the government would stop penalizing some that want to do better for themselves then we would have more getting out of poverty and dependent on the government. Yes, some won't try but the ones who do find themselves deciding to be able to live or be on the streets. And then some put themselves there because of the alarming rate of dropouts with no support at home.

perhaps that is because of the current administrations policies. People are firing and laying off and changing employee status from full time to part time. Many of our small business owner friends are now cutting back on benefits that they previously provided in full (Employees think they are entitled to these benefits and that it is the responsibility of the employer. Have you NOTICED THAT, the ingrates) and theyre laying off employees. Some of those employees didn't even vote this election!! So whatever happens to them is deserved. Maybe the fact that there are no jobs will force some of these people in business for themselves. Then let them deal with Federal rules and regs that are designed to destroy rather than encourage business. Of course many on the left will be driven into drug sales and theft.

My daughter was whining that she couldn't get a job and my son said, "I've never had anyone come knock on the door and offer me a job." My daughter got mad but she went out the next day and had three job offers by noon. It is amazing how foreigners who don't speak English can find work but U.S. citizens who speak English, after a fashion, can't.
