I don't think either of them are dissing people who work with their hands. But, according to my dad, there is a difference between a profession and a trade. A motor mechanic is a trade, just like a carpenter is a trade, an electrician is a trade, and a plumber is a trade. My dad says a profession is characterised by a recorded body of knowledge gained by post graduate university degree, and the recognition of a controlling professional organisation. It is something which requires a particular education (as in LLB or MBBS) before any training is undertaken.
The Wikipedia says -
So they are two different things - even though professions are often (but not always,) more highly regarded in society - one is not better than the other. Both are necessary, and each serves a different purpose.A profession is a vocation founded upon specialized educational training, the purpose of which is to supply disinterested objective counsel and service to others, for a direct and definite compensation, wholly apart from expectation of other business gain.
Oh, I wish I were a glow worm,
for a glow worm's never glum,
'cause how can you be grumpy
when the sun shines out your bum!

Lol, as I do you and your point of view.
But your response feels illogical to me. Why would my parents or I want to 'denigrate a segment of the population'?
Did I not write this?Even though you seem to be accusing my dad of elitism, one of his favourite sayings is "If my fellow barristers and I stopped working tomorrow, there might be a backlog in the courts - but society would work around that. However, if the dustmen stopped working today, society would grind to a halt in a few weeks."even though professions are often (but not always,) more highly regarded in society - one is not better than the other. Both are necessary, and each serves a different purpose.
Lol! Everything doesn't have to be 'us and them', but I have heard 'working class' people complain about the 'professional classes' before - its a sort of reverse snobbery.
