I read a history of Poland and Hungary and wae considering a good book about Russia but wound up reading a history of the Romanovs which I enjoyed. Anyway, this is the first of a 5 part series. It's often said that Russia is not quite Europe and not quite Asia but I wonder if this question of identity would exist but for the Mongol invasions. For over a century Russia was pulled out of its European orbit. This as also during a formative period of European history. Enjoy.

A little off topic: For the student of history check out this book. Even if you cannot find time to read the entire book, it is quite dense and covers Communism in amazing detail, read the sections in the back. The interesting thing is how interrelated culture and politics is.

Vladimir's early life is spent in full-blooded pagan style, fighting and wenching (the chronicles credit him with 800 concubines), but in about 988 he takes a step which gives Russia its characteristic identity and brings him personally the halo of a saint. Mongols plus the weakening break up of Kievan Rus brought on by fighting among Yaroslav's son. (All somewhat new to me but for the video!)

I think Russia is the only modern state whose initial capital is not part of the current nation.

The national and or regional identity has everything to do with its politics.

If you want a "bang your head on the keyboard till it bleeds" moment, try and read about the history of Germany.
I tried watching an in-depth YT video of it and got so completely turned around and confused by all the boarder shifting after the results of countless wars and conflicts.
Hell, they just recently had their boarders reset again in our lifetime.


A really good read about the "Russ" who settled a lot of the Volga valley is the book " Eaters of the Dead " reauthored my Michael Crieton(sp). It was the book the movie, " The Thirteenth Warrior " was based on.
It talks about the huge fertile valleys and how the Vikings settled there to avoid all the civil wars they were engaged in back home through the eyes of a Baghdad diplomat.
