Yes I know how many wants criminal investigations to run. Two points. First I was a military magistrate for a period of time. Part of that job was to approve or deny search authorizations. I never let the government over reach- no "fishing" expeditions as it is called. Second, Congress knows that as well, that is why when they drafted the special counsel statute they specifically added language that required the basis of the investigation to be a crime. The basis of Muehler's investigation is not a crime.

Actually I am very familiar with obstruction of justice. I was a military prosecutor and a special assistant US attorney for many years. That is why I know it is not obstruction of justice for the president to fire someone who works for him at his pleasure. Comey said as much in his bye bye speech to the FBI. Also Trump's discussions with Comey regarding Flynn likewise do not amount to obstruction of justice. Comey has actually testified before Congress that he does not think Trump obstructed justice.

But I am not an honest person and you know more than this experienced lawyer who has done this stuff in the real world. OK.

The problem is that the original mandate was legally insignificant. If we imagine a proper mandate, then yes you can expand beyond the original mandate.

Obstruction of justice is trumped up Democrat establishment crap to stir up their base because they know they're idiots.
