The domestic rat population is tiny by comparison to that time and they are not carrying the plague.
But they are still rats and they could carry the plague and other diseases. Besides, there are also those stories of rats eating babies' fingers and face. Ugh. Thanks in advance for the nightmares.

Garter snakes have certain years where their populations explode. It often results in those mass matings. Kinda freaks people out, plus they end up everywhere, in people's homes, vehicles etc. My mother grew up on a farm in the mid-west and used to talk about those years where the snakes were everywhere and then there was a bounty on them.

LOL year ago I read a story about a homeowners nightmare with non-venomous snakes. The builder cleared a piece of farm field and built a house which the people bought over winter. Come spring the house was inundated with snakes everywhere. In the walls, ceilings, etc. They abandoned the house. Even after the house was treated multiple times for snakes, it was still full of them.

Garter snakes will eat bird eggs, maybe not regular chicken eggs, but they will eat day old chicks. If you were raising quail for eggs, you wouldn't want garter snakes near your coops because quail eggs are pretty tiny and not too big for a larger garter snake to eat. They can also raid your water feature if it includes goldfish:

This is why I leave scorpions alone around my house here in Arizona. They eat the bugs I hate the most. In twenty years I've not needed an exterminator. Even the ants avoid the interior since I started my no tolerance program against any dirty dishes laying about or unsealed food-stuffs in the pantry. It helps having older children too. No Goldfish crackers or half eaten licorice on the floors.

It could have been one of those years or the place where the house was built just happened to be snake central.

Yep it was an old hayfield I think. IIRC there was a court case over it which was how it made the news or wherever I read about it. I forget if the walking away owners or their bank was the plaintiff, but they were suing to try to make the insurance company pay out the cost of the house because the snakes had rendered it uninhabitable and unmarketable because everybody knew it was the house filled with snakes.
