Yeah, I get a good amount of sun every day (helps having a dog that needs exercise). I was thinking of Ricketts in the context of 1800s England, I didn't mean to suggest you had that issue. D is a healthy specimen.

Jeez, I Googled and I guess things are pretty bad in the UK:

So here we are in late 2010 and the wonders of medical science are all around us. And yet an ailment reminiscent of Dickensian London is once more being reported by GPs across the country.
Rickets is being newly detected in several hundred children each year. The cause is Vitamin D deficiency.

This is the tip of the iceberg of a Vitamin D deficit which is affecting increasing numbers of patients including both adults and children.

Some clinical studies are suggesting that up to 50% of individuals in some ethnic minority communities have Vitamin D deficiency.

Although not exclusively a problem for ethnic minorities it could be that migration plays a part in the high incidence amongst groups like Somalis.

    Got any Somali ancestors?

One thing I know is that it's very difficult to get adequate levels of Vitamin D from food. Not may foods contain Vitamin D. Peoples who have evolved in colder and cloudier environments may have evolved better ways of coping with low Vitamin D levels but I'm not sure. It would make sense though. I can imagine that Africans suddenly thrust into a colder environment with less sun are more susceptible to becoming deficient. Plus, they are likeyl to be bundled up for a substantial part of the year reducing sun exposure even more.

    Probably. It's usually fortified.

If you need to, look into a multivitamin or just a D supplement (the irony isn't lost on me ).

I just strated taking a supplement. My friend gave me a bunch of his. I brought a few home for the weekend and left the rest at work. Yeah, Mister D is deficient in Vitamin D? Preposterous!

Then I was reading online that that is one sign of said deficiency. It all came together at that point. I've been getting very little sun and I've cut back dramatically on egg yolks since I found out my cholesterol was high. Yolks are one of the few foods with substantial levels of Vitamin D. I eat yogurt but it's simply not enough with my activity level. My buddy at work takes D supplements so I asked him for a few. Since I started taking them I have no cramps at all.
Make sure that it is D3 and not D2. And a spray is better than pills.
