Courtroom Dress Decorum

When I was a younger lawyer, it was sacred to dress appropriately for court. I still dress appropriately for court. Once (1), I was in the office dressed in jeans and boots b/c I was going to a site visit and one of my partners got sick. I was asked to cover a court appearance. I called the judge, spoke to him and let him know that I was not dressed for court. When I got there, there were two baby lawyers and he massively dressed me down in front of these lawyers for inappropriate courtroom attire. He was sending a message to them, not me.

Show respect, dress appropriately. The Court will view you a tad bit more favorably b/c you've shown a small amount of respect for the system.

The judges are human. They have some discretion based on their judgment. You want to sway their judgment positively rather than negatively.

They have no right to be on the bench if that's the case.
