Lol, that's cos Americans don't know how to make cakes (or scones, or Christmas pudding, or any sweet stuff, really)! Like when we visited New York, Boston, New Orleans, and San Francisco - the only sweet stuff worth eating were the doughnuts in Boston, and some cakes from French shops in New Orleans. Everything else had so much sugar it burned your mouth (and I like sweet things). The ice-cream was that awful whipped stuff, the pumpkin pie was just full of sugar, and what you call scones were just sweet shortbread biscuits. Even the cream came in a spray can.

A proper fruit cake, or better still, a proper plum pudding, should easily last years and years and still taste good - cos they're usually full of whisky or brandy.

This what our Christmas cake looks like - though my mum doesn't use icing sugar (she says it is unhealthy) - she covers it with marzipan (which is the original German tradition).

Oh, I wish I were a glow worm,
for a glow worm's never glum,
'cause how can you be grumpy
when the sun shines out your bum!

This thread reminds me of this Seinfeld episode -

“Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured…but not everyone must prove they are a citizen. And now, any of those who refuse, or are unable, to prove they are citizens will receive free insurance paid for by those who are forced to buy insurance because they are citizens.”

If you like fruitcake, THIS is the one to order.

Made by Monks in Oregon who do NOT skimp on the 120 proof brandy!

I'm going to have to try one of those.

Yeah - they are crazy-good. Haven't had one in a couple of years so come November must get another.

Just super earthy - the brandy soak at the end is pretty much to die for .. best pricing i've found is on Amazon.

THIS is the one to get:

    OUR 3-LB TRADITIONAL DARK FRUITCAKE - $32.95

If in the Portland, Oregon area (it's about an hour southwest) it's also a really beautiful place to visit.

LMAO. I was going to say I think it would survive in any climate that long. Mostly because nothing, not even bacteria wants to eat it!
