Sorry to hear that, but it sounds like you responded to those events for strength instead of self destruction. If only we could bottle that.

My mother used to say that "each generation grows weaker and wiser". I understood , even as a kid that "wiser" meant accumulated knowledge not better capacity for reason or common sense. She and dad sometimes did walk to school, uphill BOTH ways. I walked sometimes, by choice but it was uphill only one way and not as far. Today the bus stops at every single house! With all our technology even some farmers and loggers have to hit the gym! LOL
Now I can see how our knowledge is actively making us physically weaker.

Yes and no. All generations have their slackers and overachievers. Millennials get too much criticism regarding work, but they earn some of their criticism regarding social views. And unfortunately, socialism is becoming more popular among them.

That being said, the quickest cure to supporting socialism is prosperity. Once someone starts to make good money and sees how much gets taxed from them, they tend to become more capitalistic.

I can only speak for myself, but when I use the word "socialism", I refer to government control of an industry or welfare state schemes that allow people to live off of the system.

Socialization of certain things is ok, if it is properly designed. For example, socialized roads work. Socialized healthcare can work as well, but it depends on how you design the system.

What doesn't work is having the government run most industries in an economy, which is what socialism is as an economic system. Also, the welfare state doesn't work very well either.

That being said, I actually would be ok with a UBI system if we got rid of all other welfare. It would be cheaper to maintain, and it would require very few employees. It could also provide an option for accepting an equivalent tax break, if you didn't want or need to receive the stipend.
