Germany rejects Trump's claim it owes NATO and U.S. 'vast sums' for defense......

German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday rejected U.S. President Donald Trump's claim that Germany owes NATO and the United States "vast sums" of money for defense.

"There is no debt account at NATO," von der Leyen said in a statement, adding that it was wrong to link the alliance's target for members to spend 2 percent of their economic output on defense by 2024 solely to NATO.

"Defense spending also goes into UN peacekeeping missions, into our European missions and into our contribution to the fight against IS terrorism," von der Leyen said.

She said everyone wanted the burden to be shared fairly and for that to happen it was necessary to have a "modern security concept" that included a modern NATO but also a European defense union and investment in the United Nations.

German defense spending is set to rise by 1.4 billion euros to 38.5 billion euros in 2018 - a figure that is projected to represent 1.26 percent of economic output, Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble has said......snip~

More importantly was what she was saying with this. A Modern NATO, but also a European Defense Union.

Modern as in New. Plus a European Defense Union.

I can go for that.....as we aren't European. Then we can pull out of that and Establish a Western Alliance for our own defense of this side of the planet. The US, Canada, Mexico, Central America and South America.

They are right to reject it. Trump and his defenders have no idea how all of this works. First off, NATO member states are not obligated, and never have been obligated, to pay the U.S. one red cent. Second, the requirement for all NATO member states to spend 2% of GDP on defense was only instituted a couple years ago, all NATO member states have until 2024 to meet that requirement, and Germany is well on track to getting there in more than enough time.

This is what happens when we make a billionaire buffoon with zero political experience president. Obama bumbled plenty on foreign affairs and that was with eleven years of combined state and U.S. senate experience. Apparently we decided to double down on that failure and picked someone with zero experience. Now we'll reap the disasters.

I didn't say Trump's entire cabinet knew nothing about NATO. I said Trump knows nothing about NATO and how it works, and his defenders don't either. That's simply a fact, which I demonstrated by correcting Trump's falsehoods. He's either lying or ignorant. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt and pinning it on ignorance.
