I'll be honest and admit my views are changing. There must be something between the big centralized government most modern states have and no government at all. At least something where power devolves to the lowest local community possible so communities can mostly decide how to govern themselves, some top-down republics, some bottom-up demoracies, some monarchies, some anarchies. The liberty to experiment would likely lead, some dying off, some adopting what others do successfully, to better forms of government. And no doubt communities would have to form associations and alliances to protect their rights.

Well, more like localism, where power resides locally and only some is granted even the states. Probably something close to what existed under the Articles of Confederation.

For me localism extends to producing staples as close to home as possible as well. Local employers and money that stays in the community.

If that's what you want, fine, but you can't produce all you need and many things will be more economically imported while you focus on your comparative advantage.

I think localities can produce everything they NEED , at least rural localities. Need being the key word. I understand comparative advantage but I also understand the cost of being dependent upon foreign imports . So why not import our wants , or long lasting quasi needs ( cars, computers) form within the country. ?
Food , energy, materials for shelter and clean water should all be available locally if the grid goes down.

I would argue you'd lose in productivity and gain in costs to produce everything.

So produce the basic necessities, import your TVs and cellphones.
