Physically fit recruits for Army are hard to find. Especially in the South

Physically fit recruits for Army are hard to find. Especially in the South

The article says that only 50% of the youth during WWII were qualified for military service and that now it is down to 23%. I wonder what the percentage was when I joined in 1987. We didn't have many people in my basic course removed for fitness failure.

The Army's problem of finding physically fit recruits at a time of rising obesity in the United States is especially acute in the South — where it traditionally draws a high percentage of soldiers, a study published Wednesday finds.

Army recruits from Southern states are generally in poorer physical condition than those from other parts of the country, concluded researchers at The Citadel, a military college in Charleston, S.C.

“This has a real impact on national security,” said Daniel Bornstein, a researcher who led the study.

The regional distinction also suggests that government policy can influence fitness, and the South may be falling behind the rest of the country. “Some of the greatest public health achievements have come as the result of state-level policy change,” the study found.

Eleven states — Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia — had among the highest rates of recruits who become injured during basic training.

The results reflect trends in the nation where Southern states generally have higher obesity rates. Adult obesity is 35% or higher in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and West Virginia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Lack of physical fitness and obesity contribute to a higher injury rate among soldiers in basic training. Each recruit lost to attrition cost the government $31,000 in 2005, according to the study.

I can't say that I find this surprising.

There is a direct correlation between poverty and obesity. Poor people tend to eat more high-calorie foods because they're cheaper than healthy choices and the southern states are some of the poorest. Added to that, people from the southern states really enjoy their fried foods. Combined with a lack of physical activity, many southerners are in poor physical shape. One of the reasons for that lack of activity is the fact that southerners don't really walk anywhere - they drive. Many of the roads are narrow and don't even really accommodate bicycles safely and many southern communities don't even have sidewalks except in the cores of larger cities. The heat and humidity also discourages physical activity.

Not buying it. Bad habits and resistance to change are the main culprits here. It is not more expensive to eat well. It's more expensive to follow ridiculous fad diets like "organic" but beans and whole grains, for example, simply aren't expensive. On the contrary, they're incredibly cheap. So is meat.

In the Deep South fried food is the norm for most people who are not fitness conscious.

I suspect it always was but obesity rates were lower in the past. The problem here is not poverty but too much food and too little activity.

We've got a nation of fat bodies; most of them have muscles in their thumbs so they can play with their play stations/gaming. The kids of today never go out and play in most cases, instead stay glued to the tv monitor. What ever happened to the days of going out and riding your bikes, building tree forts, cops and robbers, camping out in your backyard at night, etc?

Helicopter parents seem to prefer to keep their kids indoors rather than 'risk' letting them play outside where they might get a boo boo on their knee.
