I feel like I'm missing something here. I don't understand the quick response to contacting insurance. Doesn't coming to a solution with the other party make sense here?

He insisted that he was 'fine'. My wanting to send him something isn't to assuage guilt or bribe him not to sue.

That doesn't matter. You may want to do the right thing, but you should also protect yourself. It was a simple accident.

Call your insurance carrier and report the claim. Let them deal with it.

They might require him to put the dog down in order to pay the claim.

Don't they have to ask for monetary compensation first before jumping to a lawsuit?

I don't believe that is the case. I would inform your home owners insurance agent. Then leave it alone.

And I thought I was a good dog-owner.

I've owned large breed dogs for almost 2 decades. I've understood and respected their limitations and haven't put them or others in harms way. But, today I underestimated one of them and the FedEx delivery kid got bit. He's being exceptionally cool about it, but I still feel like I need to do something.

Would sending a gift card to this particular driver be in bad taste? Or would something else be better?

Send him a document for his signature absolving you of all responsibility.

When I was working in El Centro, California one of my co-worker's dogs bit a mail person. Though the mail person knew the family and did not want to make a big stink about it the U.S. Postal Service got all $#@!y. Not sure if it cost them any money but they had to make sure the dog was restrained when the mail person showed up.
