This is quite good. I'm a little over half way through and what really comes to the fore at least for me is Russia's dual cultural identity. In some ways Russia appears more Oriental than European. The result of Mongol rule? Fascinating history here. I highly recommend it. Hat tip @Green Arrow for mentioning it.
