Run Silent Run Deep: The Kids Who Protect the US with Armageddon

I'm a WW2 Movie fanatic. I watched Run Silent, Run Deep this weekend. Then I saw this article and it reminded me of how young those kids and today's military personnel really are:

Run Silent Run Deep: The Kids Who Protect the US with Armageddon
. The link provides a link to a video that is a snippet from “Life Aboard US Navy Ballistic Missile Submarine USS Wyoming.” Watch it carefully. Observe that the vast majority of the crew are very young; almost children. Observe the deep and focused seriousness with which they carry out their assigned tasks on the USS Wyoming when it is on station. Think about what it takes to serve for months sealed in a steel tube deep beneath the surface of the ocean with the constant unremitting whirr and whine of machinery. Take a look at the rack space, the personal space, these young crew members are given. Take a careful and thoughtful look at those scenes where they can be seen to be walking in a forest of carefully monitored and attended vertical tubes. The tubes hold the mission.

It was Ratt Patrol for me but it is pretty much the same. What amazes me is the difference between those serving and those protesting. Perhaps we should bring back the draft to grow the snowflakes a little.

I have an uncle who spent 35 years in the Navy... 26 of that on subs.

After he retired he and my aunt moved to Denver of all places. When I was at Fort Bragg, I got a call from him saying he had bought an RV and was going to drive across the country to visit me. He told me when he was leaving and when he expected to be at Bragg. He never showed up.

I always figured since the RV was kind of shaped like a sub, he took it to the coast, put it in the water, took her down to 200 meters and set out for Pearl.

The inside of the sub seemed larger than I would have thought. Anyway, I don't think that I could do it.

    Crimson Tide

As a former pro in the business I can recommend this movie.

I spent a little time on 3 different boats, one of them was a boomer... The SSBN 620 John Adams. I also hitched rides on the SSN 650 Pargo, a Sturgeon Class attack sub, and the SSN 671 Narwhal, which was kind of a special boat.

We used to have a WWII sub here at Patriot's Point Museum. I went into it and when I climbed out the other end I was amazed that any crew could have worked and lived there.
