    How did Christianity spread

    How did Christianity spread

Interesting story about how such a small sect became the largest religion on Earth. Some cool graphics at the link.

Today, Christian religions are practiced by 2.2 billion people all around the world. That represents over 30% of the world’s population, making it the world’s most followed religion.

But rewind 2,000 years ago, and Christianity was a tiny religious sect. From an ideological perspective, researchers have often found themselves asking: how did Christianity become so successful? Did it spread through grass-roots movements, or was its growth more heavily influenced by political heavyweights?

The story of Christianity gives us invaluable insight into the myriad ways ideologies form – and the effects they have through widespread social change.

And interesting point: convert the leaders. For the first thousand years or so of the growth of Christianity, the key to growth was to covert powerful rulers- then the powerful rulers basically converted his subjects.

I think Constantine making it the state religion did the most. When the Empire fell the Church was about all that was left of true government. That sealed it.

I am amazed that a small number of people kept it going for so long but i think it was more political reasons that allowed it to grow.

Agree, being the last man standing, so to speak, after the fall of the Roman Empire, it provided a unifying social order.

Being monotheistic helped. It offered individual salvation with a universal God.

    Printing helped too.

I disagree. It was maintained that way at times but not spread that way until the 1500's.

It explains why it is such a fundamentally flawed religion, because it has been re-told and re-translated hundreds and thousands of times before any solid version of it was ever made record of. Not that any other religion is any better...
