Perhaps Coup is the wrong word. Perhaps Coup d'etat is better suited for what is going on now.

What we see now is as it always has been. We just were not alive to see it. If you were an expert in US Political History, and I am not, you would not be surprised by the current polarization. As MisterVeritis once said, the current climate reminded him of the pre-Civil War years.I don't believe we will get that kind of result though.

I think when you start pushing identity politics a split is the only natural outcome. We aren't American any longer, we are African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Gay Americans, Illegal Americans, Asian Americans, and there can be no common ground as long as we see ourselves through that lens. Soon the American part will be dropped.

I do not believe for an instant that it is the conservative contingent that is fostering these splits. I also do not believe the old guard rank and file Democrats want to see this happen. However, I do believe there is a group who defies common labels and simply consist of those who wish to control the rest of us.

The split was there at the inception of the US political system. The "united" States have always been an illusion. Factions emerged immediately after the constitution was ratified.
