Generally speaking, forums like these polarize into two positions on any given issue. Almost everything is argued within the context of this false dichotomy. Positions that deviate from this binary view of political issues are either dismissed out of hand or taken as proof that the offending party must be a member of the other side. Probably the most polarizing issue of all is Trump himself.
On the one side, you have the Trump-haters, who think Trump is Satan. It seems as if their entire existence revolves around hating Trump. And if you are not as obsessed with hating Trump as they are, then they simply assume you must be a Trump cultist or a "rightwinger". The latter sorts of accusations are particularly galling given the penchant for Trump-haters to espouse increasingly nationalistic and jingoistic rhetoric about US-Russian relations. I fail to see what's "liberal" about blindly parroting the assertions of government officials and corporate media outlets. Maybe I'm missing something.
And on the other side, you have the Trump cultists, who are, as Hillary Clinton famously claimed, deplorable. She got in a lot of trouble for that, but she was speaking a truth. There is a sizable subset of Trump supporters who meet that definition. In general, they tend to be white, male baby-boomers - possibly the most arrogant and pigheaded demographic in US history. They heap effusive praise on virtually anything Trump does, no matter how obviously stupid or wrongheaded it is. And anyone who points out that Trump isn't really a genius or a messiah is subjected to a constant stream of petty denialism and infantile lashing out.
Most people who post on political forums like this one fall into one of those two categories. As I've noted before, political forums are disproportionately populated by partisans. The longer I've posted at these kinds of places, the less aware I become that the large majority of the country does not think or behave like these brainwashed drones. And that's precisely the point. These partisans do not represent most Americans. The majority of the country is going unrepresented because of these partisan extremists. And anyone who falls outside their partisan extreme is usually too busy living their life to bother with the mess and filth of electoral politics. The only question becomes: How long can this partisan cancer grow before it kills the host? Granted, the host is very, very strong, and is capable of withstanding a great deal of punishment. But even a great country like America has its limits.
