This is another example of the very effective Maoism of the American left. A strong willed person may take the view I will believe as I wish, say what I wish and I don't care what anyone thinks of me or does to me. The Maoist says.. "fine but what about the affect on your family?". All totalitarian systems punish entire families not just the offender. A fantastic way to crush individual liberty.

Some of my wife's ancestors in Alabama were slave owners. I certainly hope her employers don't find out.
As for that teacher who freaked out because the little boy called her "ma'am", the article never get around to stating the root cause of her objections to the word, but I wouldn't be surprised if it had less to do with PC than just the tendency of some teachers to treat their classrooms as little fiefdoms where their whims and preferences rule the day. My eighth grade history teacher, Mr. Buckwalter, had a thing about the phrase "I don't care". It didn't matter what context you said it in or to whom, if you said it in his classroom, he'd mark it down in a book, and if you said it three times in the course of a year he would take you out into the hall and give you a few whacks with a large paddle.
