Science cannot prevent mass shootings, but that shouldn't stop us from fixing mental

This was actually a good article on mental health in relation to mass shootings, if for no other reason than I've read many like it that say we don't know enough, can't profile in a population, etc, but then take a flying leap to the conclusion we must restrict guns--this psychiatrist doesn't do that.

Science cannot prevent mass shootings, but that shouldn't stop us from fixing mental health care

It would be wonderful to be able to predict and prevent mass shootings such as those that occurred in Jacksonville, Florida, Aurora, Colorado, Las Vegas, Sandy Hook, Connecticut, Parkland, Florida and elsewhere. But as much as people want to think that criminal investigations, trials, psychologists and psychiatrists can lead us to prevention, or determine a straightforward “why” for most mass killings and their perpetrators, they can't.

There is no "magic bullet" for identifying future mass killers, and certainly not one associated with my specialty of psychiatry. The difficulty is that, as much as we can describe the traits that most mass killers have in common, they aren’t useful as predictive tools.

For instance, almost all of those who have killed large numbers of people are males. Over half (in the U.S. and Canada) are Caucasian. Half or more have a diagnosable mental disorder. Close to 100 percent eat meat.

I'm not trying to be cute; I'm making an important point. It makes sense to look for factors, such as a recent history of severe violence, that contribute significantly to individual risk, but it is illogical to point the arrow of causation backward toward large population groups. Millions of times more mentally ill North Americans don't commit mass killings than do.

It is inaccurate and patently unfair to the 20 million or so diagnosably mentally ill people in North America to suggest that mental illness per se is at the root of mass killing — or any killing except suicide, for that matter. Very large and well-designed studies show over and over that the presence of mental illness in itself (excepting substance abuse) is neither a predictor of nor risk factor for violence, and certainly not lethal violence. I am far more worried about potential harm from "ordinary" criminals, abusive spouses, people impaired by alcohol, amphetamine and heroin abusers and sleepy drivers.....

You have to wonder why a lot of drugs handed about like candy have black box warnings on them. It certainly isn't for advertising purposes.

As a psychiatrist I doubt the author wants to address the possibility drugs he prescribes might have an adverse affect.

Hopefully, one day Science will find cure for all Mental and Physical illness. But that is very far in the future.

So far only Smallpox has been eliminated.

Right, and science and reason will create the perfect society in the perfect man.

So...why do we have more mass shootings now than before, like in the 60's and 70's and 80's?

    No-fault divorce.

    Who's My Daddy Game.

    Video games glorifying violence.

Movies and TV shows glorifying violence.

Glorifying $#@!s, when the losers still can't get laid, not even with $5 in a Mexican $#@!house.

Abortionists celebrating death and denigrating those who celebrate life.

Society trying to turn males into females. Boys ARE different from girls, and there's not only nothing wrong with that, it's ESSENTIAL to recognize this to raise healthy boys. Only mentally diseased boys want to be girls.

Socialism's stupid belief that people should have free stuff. Some people get upset when they don't get their free stuff. Or when they lose a game and don't want the participation trophy.

Many of them are immigrants. A large fraction, actually.

Pretending mental illness is merely an alternative lifestyle. It's not. It's a disease.

Lots of things cause mass shootings.

Let's discuss was does not CAUSE mass shootings.

    The NRA.

    The gun.

    The bullets.

    The victims.

The people in a different state who didn't squeeze the trigger.

    Republicans.
    Freedom Requires Obstinance.

We the People DID NOT vote in a majority Rodent Congress, they stole it via election fraud.

    But the OP is right.

Fixing the process needed to lock up loonies would go a long way to preventing mass killings.

    Yeah.

More "Gun Free Zones" leads to fewer armed victims, and it's the armed victims that shoot back and lower the body count.
