    New Segregation

I mentioned in another thread the increase in demands for segregation at universities as a result of liberal identity politics. The response was well, gee, I haven't heard of that. So here are just a few of the many stories on it.

Universities warned of 'creeping segregation' as Sheffield launches LGBT-only student halls: "Universities have been warned of a “creeping segregation” on campus after Sheffield became the first in the country to open student housing where only gay and transgender students are allowed to live."

An Unusual Idea for Fixing School Segregation: "Many proposals for addressing school segregation seem pretty small, especially when compared to the scale and severity of the problem. Without the power of a court-ordered desegregation mandate, progress can feel extremely far off, if not altogether impossible. Some even believe—understandably though mistakenly—that no meaningful steps can be taken to integrate schools unless housing segregation is resolved."

Black student calls for racially segregated events at University of Iowa: "It’s not enough for the University of Iowa to host “black-theme events” that are open to everyone. According to Daily Iowan columnist Wylliam Smith, the taxpayer-funded institution should exclude non-black people from certain events on campus – a sort of permanent, location-specific day of absence."

NON-WHITE STUDENTS AT UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN DEMAND SEGREGATION: "Student activists at the University of Michigan are insisting on their own “permanent designated space on central campus for Black students and students of color to organize and do social justice work,” The College Fix reports."

Universities Are Embracing Segregation Again (Just Don’t Call It Segregation): "Colleges around the country are creating facilities with the goal of separating students on the basis of race."

There's plenty more if you look.

I find the thinking of the Daily Iowan columnist in the third example fascinating.

    https://www.thecollegefix.com/black-...iversity-iowa/

If we have black-only events it removes those ingrained expectations. It rids black kids of the constant need to fight stereotypes. It frees students to truly be themselves, with no onlookers casting judgment.
    "Judgment" like...this?

Smith says black students are forced to “conform” in a majority-white area: “A black or brown student in Iowa has to talk white, act white, dress white in order to fit in.”
So, if I understand, being negatively judged for "acting black" - bad. Being negatively judged for "acting white" - good. This also assumes that a black student who truly wants to "be themselves" is going to be wanting to act in a non-white way - whatever that is. And that if a black student is "acting white", it's because he or she is "conforming" - not because it's in any way normal for them. In other words, black students, in this columnist's opinion, need a space where they can be free to act in a way that he approves of as being (stereo)typical of the way black people should act. Got it.

Segregation is a reality of American (and Canadian) life. My only objections here are that it is being officially enforced and that this all seems to be predicated on victim status. Otherwise, who cares?
Whoever criticizes capitalism, while approving immigration, whose working class is its first victim, had better shut up. Whoever criticizes immigration, while remaining silent about capitalism, should do the same.

The universities appear to want to protect people. The intention might be good but it's demeaning to think people can't deal with it themselves. And it teaches people to run to paternalistic authority.

I'd used it in argument as another example of liberal racism--it goes beyond race though.

It's better example of their hypocrisy and self-righteousness. Segregation is normal but these people lament it until they don't...like when blacks and assorted deviants desire it.

Yes, there is an element of hypocrisy in those SJWs who fight against it end up promoting it. The left is sinister.

    Undecided between incoherent and sinister.
