George W Bush behind 'worst single mistake' in US history

George W Bush behind 'worst single mistake' in US history

Its ironic that an Obama and GWBush criticize trump, considering how they both failed Americans and America. Americans are doing better now than in decades and so is our Economy.

President Trump said Wednesday former President George W. Bush is responsible for the biggest mistake in American history.

“The worst single mistake ever made in the history of our country: going into the Middle East, by President Bush,” Trump said during an interview with the Hill. “Obama may have gotten [U.S. military personnel] out wrong, but going in is, to me, the biggest single mistake made in the history of our country.”

Trump, who failed to win Bush's vote in the 2016 presidential election, blamed the spiraling cost of the war efforts in the region.

“Because we spent $7 trillion in the Middle East," the president said. "Now if you wanna fix a window some place they say, 'Oh gee, let’s not do it.' Seven trillion, and millions of lives — you know, ‘cause I like to count both sides. Millions of lives.”

“To me, it's the worst single mistake made in the history of our country. Civil War you can understand. Civil War, Civil War. That’s different," the president continued. "For us to have gone into the Middle East, and that was just, that was a bad day for this country, I will tell you.”

This is not the first time Trump has spoken about the cost of conflicts in the Middle East. He mentioned the $7 trillion figure in a tweet in February.

"This will be a big week for Infrastructure," he wrote on Twitter. "After so stupidly spending $7 trillion in the Middle East, it is now time to start investing in OUR Country!"

According to Politifact, the U.S. has spent about $2 trillion thus far on military-related activity in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Syria. Trump's claim is based on projected expenditure in the region by 2053 calculated by Boston University political scientist Neta Crawford, including future costs associated with treating wounded veterans and debt accrued.

IMO, any conflict sine WWII has been a lab experiment testing certain chemicals on indigenous populations. Of course, we don't test chemicals and probably haven't since 'Nam where we tested chemical warfare.
We've studied battle field injuries and treatment as well as new weapons. We have found different ways to kill opponents.
Costs? Yep, we've spent a ton of money to learn how to kill better.
The downside is the cost of human lives. We have so many more military that survive thanks to battlefield medical techniques. But the soaring cost home-side has had a unbelievable impact.
But with some of the most miserable treatments and lower spending on disabled vets, it has become a shame.
You would think we would spend more time and money repairing these poor souls than we spend putting them in harms way. But thanks to the corruption within the VA Administration, they don't get the care they need to become "whole" again, mentally and physically.
So, it isn't just the cost for the engagement, it is the aftermath in whole.
7 trillion dollars would go a long way to feed and house these survivors and help their families.

The Taliban government in Afghanistan absolutely needed to be punished for its harboring of Bin Laden. Between that and the visceral need we all felt after 9-11, the invasion of Afghanistan was not a mistake - it was inevitable. Beyond that, Trump is right. From attempts to democratize Afghanistan to the invasion of Iraq to our current involvement in Syria - it's all been one huge, bloody snowball rolling downhill with no stopping in sight.

Yes, Pres. W had to do something, right enough. & the raids on the Taliban & Al Qaeda were good - probably too good. As outlined in the movie 12 Strong, US Special Forces were first in, & spotted for air strikes on Taliban concentrations & other targets of opportunity. All well & good, that went very well. The bean counters in the W admin saw that & figured that hardly any troops were required to impose our military will on Afghanistan, & by extension, on Iraq.

The difference between elite highly trained troops who spoke the local languages & who were essentially finding & fixing enemy targets by fires, & invading both countries with troops who didn't speak any of the local languages & didn't know the cultures - should have been stark for the US military & civilian admin.

I don't know that we could have successfully invaded Afghanistan @ all - the terrain is unforgiving & provides too much cover for enemy forces, who too often were on their home ground, knew all the peculiarities of the environment, & were acclimated to the altitude, weather, geography & had networks of support, weapons caches, routes, & on & on.

We might have been able to hold Iraq, but it would have meant stripping US garrisons everywhere else in the World & going in heavy, instead of going in light. CIA & military logistics people knew all that, the CIA had recent experience in Afghanistan, & we'd supplied Iraq with intel & weapons during the Iran-Iraq war, & run Desert Storm to drive Iraq out of Kuwait. We knew perfectly well what was required, but the W admin overruled all the people who knew better, & went into Iraq undermanned. The net result is that Iraq may never recover as a society, & Iran (& Syria & Hamas & by proxy, the CIS) is vastly strengthened by our fumbling half-hearted efforts. From a regional POV, it would have been better to leave Saddam Hussein in power in Iraq - @ least he was holding the country together, if only by sheer terror & brutality.

Trump is wrong. President Wilson getting us into WWI is the biggest mistake my any President. It was none of our business; it didn't concern us; we had no grievance.

    Wilson's action was a disgrace.
Liberals are a clear and present danger to our nation

He is wrong. Our non-involvement in Afghanistan following 9-11 wouldn't have been tolerated by a single member of this forum. Bush held out, got Congressional approval to use the military as the War Powers Act dictates. Al-Qaeda named a threat to national security, we could not allow the Taliban to remain in power in Afghanistan nor allow al-Qaeda sanctuary in that nation and mission accomplished.

Iraq had to be invaded, this has been explained to this thread so many times it grows tiresome, al-Qaeda had to be taken out but if you leave Saddam and the status quo in power in Iraq, the threat of Islamic Terror would continue, Iraq was al-Qaeda and other extremist group's primary bone of contention....as has been shown.

Let's not forget our involvement in Syria was late. Meanwhile that 'bloody snowball' was being influenced and directed by those other than the United States. Our involvement came when we finally realized ISIS had to be defeated and rolled back, when we finally realized it was going to require United States overt military involvement. Reminding all, it was the US military that did roll ISIS back and reverse the shiitshow Obama allowed to occur in Iraq(that we never should have left) and Syria.

Ethereal will be happy to know this is an area I break with Trump. He uses the Iraq War as a divide against the Bush sector of the Republican Party. No telling what this President would have done following 9-11, he's been very aggressive himself as Commander in Chief, this Neocon has been pleasantly surprised.
