US, Canada reach agreement on new trade deal

After all the fussing and fighting, Canada and US reach trade deal to replace NAFTA.

The United States and Canada agreed to a deal to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement shortly before a midnight deadline.

The 24-year-old NAFTA, which President Donald Trump railed against as a disaster, will be replaced by the USMCA — the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

Trump tweeted his approval Monday morning for what he called a "wonderful" trilateral agreement.

In a joint statement, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said the agreement "will strengthen the middle class, and create good, well-paying jobs and new opportunities for the nearly half billion people who call North America home."

This is more than just news. While our own Constituencies here bubbled on about the breakdown of relations with our allies. Trump continued to whine about unfair trade practices by both Mexico and Canada within the framework of NAFTA. Americans....knowing that Canada and Mexico were both cheating and making/running massive trade imbalances by closing their markets to US goods and services.....still opposed Trump for mere political reasons. Trump....comes out of this with a better trade deal. The USMCA. Just as he promised, he would gut some and rewrite other trade agreements.

You'll now see the opposition come from Congress for no other reason than that this would be seen as a Trump win. This deal is as big on the political election front as it is on the economic issues. It is a much better deal for America. It levels the playing field regarding Autos and agricultural goods. And it comes while the media is out there claiming Trump is a train wreck. These are massive deals both with Mexico and now Canada comes on board.

We like everything about Canadians except their garden variety Trudeau tulip but then, few Canadians like him either.

This is a good thing although the devil is in the details. I'm surprised how many have had the time to look at this critically considering it was just announced. I'll reserve judgement. Bottom line though the fact that they came to some sort of agreement is a good thing.
