The collusion was started inadvertently by George Papadopoulos, a Trump campaign foreign policy adviser's big mouth after 'he told an Australian diplomat that Russia had political “dirt” on Hillary Clinton. Australian officials then alerted their American counterparts.'

Trump Jr and his son in law were contacted by two Russians claiming to have dirt on Hillary Clinton. After a few minutes into the meeting it became apparent that they did not, so the meeting ended with nothing happening.

The DNC and Clinton campaign sent paid agents of those two entities to collude with Russian agents in an attempt to gather dirt on Trump. When there was none, they helped develop the Steele /Trump dossier.

For the record, I've never claimed Trump colluded with Russian agents in order to influence the election. It is clear however that Russia did attempt to influence voters with an extensive media campaign.
