US Army issues prototype draft for 6.8 mm Next Generation Squad Weapons
I wonder why they picked 6.8mm. That will take the US out of NATO compatibly rules.
On 4 October the US Army Contracting Command - New Jersey, on behalf of Project Manager Soldier Weapons (PM SW), issued a draft prototype opportunity notice (PON) for Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW) chambered for a novel 6.8 mm cartridge.
The overall objective of the PM SW is stated to be to "ensure(s) that soldiers on the battlefield have overmatch capabilities in individual and crew-served weapons".
Two distinct but correlated infantry weapon programmes within the latest PON draft that fall under the Product Manager Individual Weapons (PM IW) part of PM SW are the NGSW-R and NGSW-AR projects. The NGSW-R is planned to replace the ubiquitous M4 carbine series, while the NGSW-AR is to eventually replace the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) in the automatic rifleman role in the US Army's Brigade Combat Teams.
