The lust for power and control increases in direction proportion to the scale of government. That is why we must limit the scale of government. I started a thread on political decentralization as a check against tyranny and corruption. I could repost my thoughts here if you wouldn't mind.

I think you are conflating the state with government.

Government predates the state. Pre-civilized humans had governments without states. In that regard, the longest continuous government are the organic social structures - families, communities, religions, etc. - that constitute the majority of human social regulation.

Probably Great Britain, or England actually. I didn't look but ran my head around the world. It seems to be the longest continuous one.

I think the power sneaked up on us. Until the industrial revolution power was mostly local. After it, all the stops were run over. I don't think anyone realized it until we got to where we are.

I don't think it was so much not being vigilant as being caught not looking in the right direction.

The right to petition the government? How to do that?

What about Rome. Even the Eastern empire lasted 1000 after the Western empire collapsed.

No, just lobbying, particularly of Congress. The actual constitutional text states:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

It is silent on whether this extends to third parties. Furthermore, it's supposed to be a redress for grievances, not rent-seeking efforts to create legislation that advantages large corporations over small business or private citizens.
In quoting my post, you affirm and agree that you have not been goaded, provoked, emotionally manipulated or otherwise coerced into responding.

No court will ever say the Constitution disallows hiring a lobbyist to advance your cause. Won't happen.
