Mental illness, depression, suicidal tendencies, etc, statistically tend to impact those who are more intelligent and have higher IQ's, as opposed to the dull. It would explain why it is so casually dismissed by some.

Actually, an extensive study done of 987,308 subjects by the University of Bristol in England found just the opposite to be true. In fact, they found that suicide rates among those with IQs on the lower end of the scale were 2-3 times as high as among those on the upper end.

I don't have a direct link to the study because it was published in the States by Baylor University Media, but the results were released in 2005. The lead researcher was Dr. David Gunnell, Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Bristol. They linked the higher suicide rate to lower IQs at least partly because lower IQ people tend to make poor life decisions, which in turn create greater stress. Higher IQ types tend to be better able to cope with depression because they possess greater problem solving capability.

The two studies are not necessarily at odds, but perhaps an apples and oranges comparison. One is speculating that so-called low IQ may not always be indicative of lower intelligence, but instead reflective of an underlying significant mental illness, such as schizophrenia that is impeding normal cognitive function and ultimately results in an inability to cope (or perform well on IQ tests). It also references the contribution of poverty to the statistics, however, it stands to reason that the poor are the least likely to receive treatment for any type of mental illness or disorder, thus leading to a domino effect of increasingly limited choices in life. Furthermore, that study is focused primarily on suicide.

The second study focused on the relationship between high IQ and mood disorders (depression, dysthymia and bipolar), anxiety disorders (generalized, social and obsessive-compulsive), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism within the community of Mensa members. In order to qualify for Mensa, you need to pass very specific tests which tend to be biased in favor of people who actually have an education. It doesn't exclude the poor, but by definition is more inclusive of people who are more advantaged.

Right, Xl's were about intelligence and mental illness while Cletus's was about intelligence and suicide.

I know I am not allowed to question a mod. I don't mind that you gave me a warning. But in all honesty, it is not bickering. I was sticking up for a person for a good reason. I am quite disappointed that although there were mods posting in this thread that a warning would be given to me for bickering but a thread ban was not give to the person who told a potentially suicidal person to go off themselves. I am very disappointed. If it were my forum and I seen a person do that to another person I would have forum banned them.

Maybe there is the chance that you didn't see those posts. But I am not sure about that,since you were also posting in the thread. I may get forum banned for questioning a mod, and if I do, I accept it with honors. But it is sad that a person can say what Cletus did to another human being and no one step in and say something. What is this world coming to where that kind of behavior is acceptable. But behavior like mine is not. Behavior where a person stands up for what is right is frowned upon. This is not normal in any way. I am disappointed.
