Those tariffs are ultimately paid for by the American consumers.

They are designed to change the behavior of the target nation. It is working fine with Europe- we may end up with no tariffs on anything between the US and Europe. That is good. China will be a harder nut to crack- but they are the most egregious. They engage in dumping (which is illegal) and they steal intellectual property from other nations.

Agreed on the intellectual property issue but that's a different issue.

A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security told the Washington Examiner that importers owe the federal government $4.4 billion for importing goods hit by the tariffs through Oct. 2, but said it was unclear how much of that total has been collected. The Treasury Department didn't have details on what portion of the $4.4 billion had been collected, and how much was still owed.

Still, the assessments show that the tariffs are imposing a real cost to importers, who are responsible for paying the charge.

According to DHS, U.S. Customs and Border Protection had assessed $2.34 billion in duties on steel imports and $615 million on aluminum.

Trump followed that up with a 25 percent tariff on $50 billion worth of imports from China, to retaliate against China's failure to protect U.S. intellectual property rights, and its policy of forced technology transfer. He then hit another $200 billion worth of Chinese goods with a 10 percent tariff that could rise to 25 percent next year.

CBP said those tariffs against China have led to duty assessments of $1.45 billion against goods from China as of early October......snip~

And Rising.....Imagine that. What say ye?

Meanwhile back at the deficit, what difference does that make?

I think it will be hard on China but they are re grouping, and they are moving forward without us. They are making solid alliances with other nations. We are trying to crush them but it may make them stronger. Meanwhile we are trying to take Chinas place in manufacturing in order to make our nation prosperous. What our administration does not realize or care about is that China was taking one for the team when it came to their environment. When we go balls out in manufacturing we are going to start seeing some of the same negative effects as china did with their industrial boom. They can't even see the skyline. They are forced to buy bottled air if they want a breath of fresh air. Their water is turned to poison, and we are following in their footsteps.

Although it will seem that we are making America great again and bringing jobs back to our soil. We will also find that we are making America toxic. We will destroy our nation in the name of prosperity. In the meanwhile China is moving on and moving forward gearing towards green energy and fixing the damages they have done to their land. While we go backwards into the fossil fuel age. For now anyways.

Dumping is illegal- it put Solyndra out of business. And the IP issue is part of the tariff negotiations with China.

You are right, we sure can. But we have a bad track record thus far. With de regulations we can only wait and see how it goes.

With deregulation, we know how it goes. The environment and the planet takes yet another hit.
News: Rich people paying rich people to tell middle class people to blame poor people.

They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it's not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.

Even without de regulation we were taking a hit, now with de regulations it could be really bad. I know because I lived next to Hanford and that nuclear facility was making the entire city sick. Everyone there has some sort of neurological issues. The EPA didn't help us then, imagine now. My mother used to live behind a toxic paint shop. They were painting in the open air and it was bad. She was getting sick. She turned them in to the city and the EPA guess what they did? Nothing! That was when there still was an EPA. That was when there were regulations. An entire population of people made sick with no voice and no recourse. It is a shame. It might get a whole lot worse here.
