The American experiment ended in 1789 with the ratification of the US constitution. It was an obvious attempt by aristocratic elements to put a lid on the revolutionary fervor that had been stirred up in the 1770's. It represented a massive centralization of power with government based on the demonstrably false pretense of a "united" States. Clearly, they were not united then, and they are not united now. The US should dissolve the union and replace it with a confederation of States. The States can maintain free trade and travel between one another and there can be a mutual defense pact in times of war, but other than that, the States should maintain separate and independent political systems.
Power always thinks it has a great soul, and vast views, beyond the comprehension of the weak. And that it is doing God service when it is violating all His laws.

If the political right were often guilty of this sort of reprehensible behavior, I would certainly criticize it also.

But with the exception of the incident in Charlottesville, Virginia (in August of 2017), the far right has not been known for taking to the streets, rather than following the normal political process.

The far left, however, is guilty of precisely that.

What did the Tea Party do that was "bad" other than carry around scary looking weapons (legally)?

I would prefer to return to what the Founders gave us. A federal government with limited and enumerated powers and all other power remaining with the States and the people.

Some of the founders didn't even consider it a truly federal government, which is why some of them opposed the constitution.

Probably the biggest problem is the US government's ability to act directly on individuals instead of having to intermediate with their State governments.

I see no way to keep such a system in place without it reverting to some kind of tyranny. Even early on when the US government was comparatively small and decentralized, it still resulted in intense factionalism.

I have long felt that the uphill battle was the Revolutionary War culminating in the Articles of Confederation, and the downhill battle began, regardless perhaps the best of intentions, with the Constitution.
