And Jefferson owned slaves and Jack Kennedy was a womanizer , maybe Harriet Tubman was a $#@!? Did MLK ever get some on the side or did Eleanor R. really write all those clever quotes herself?
Let it go. Realize that the version of history we reveal today probably isn't quite true either and recognize what was accomplished without trying to canonize the person accomplishing it. Most historical figures will tend to be power seekers with lots of wrong doing in their path.
In other words grade schools of America: $#@!s can and have done important things. If there is any connection between famous deeds and character it is probably a negative one. DON'T worship other people! Period!

What Columbus's detractors omit is how by the time he arrived the native Caribs had displaced the native Taínos by warfare, extermination, and assimilation. @ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Island_Caribs

Conflict is the default state for humans. People, and governments have acted proactively in the past, and present, to mitigate that natural impulse. (i.e. treaties, international laws of war to protect civilians in war time, economic blocks, etc.)

That and poverty seem to be a natural state of humans. That's why when I see posts saying the answer is we should all just be nice and just get along I shake my head.
