    Goodbye, Columbus Day

    Nothing is sacred anymore.

    Goodbye, Columbus Day

Columbus is everywhere. The Genoese explorer may have never set foot in North America, but he still managed to get his name and mug all over the Western Hemisphere. Most U.S. cities carry multiple references to Christopher Columbus—and not just on statues and street names, but the cities themselves. From Columbia, South Carolina to Columbus, Ohio, the Admiral of the Ocean Sea staked a hard-to-erase claim over millions of acres of the United States. Heck, the nation’s capital, the District of Columbia, is Columbus Country.

But in recent years, efforts to de-Columbus the U.S. have grown in strength and size, thanks to the famed navigator’s increasingly problematic historical reputation: Christopher Columbus, after all, kicked off a horrific genocide, treated non-white people as sub-human, and wasn’t even the first European to happen upon the Americas. Scores of cities and three states have replaced his namesake holiday with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Statues and memorials devoted to Columbus now draw the regular attention of protesters and vandals, while his parades are getting rebranded and cancelled. Are we sailing toward a New World without Columbus?

I am not a fan of erasing history no matter how horrific. I do not agree with the tearing down of statues and all that. I think even if the history is bad we should not try to erase it. We need to know the true history in order to not repeat it.
We are all brothers and sisters in humanity. We are all made from the same dust of stars. We cannot be separated because all life is interconnected.

Correct, but according to the video the reason Columbus is being torn down are false.

The people who are off on Columbus Day will never let a Federal Holiday go away.

Here's how stupid it gets. I live in a very conservative state. Our capitol is Columbia. They refused to celebrate it. Sometimes, the people here give me a headache.

I am not sure why it is a federal holiday. There are no major celebrations.

Even if the stories of wrongdoing are exaggerated - Columbus did not discover America. For one thing, it wasn't lost. People were clearly living in the Americas, furthermore, there are some uncanny similarities between the pyramids of the Olmec, Maya and Aztec and the pyramids of Egypt, including the illustrations within the structures. Of course, South America was once attached to Africa, with the west coast of Africa being a mere 1,600 miles away from the most eastern tip of South America. Recently, archaeologists discovered the presence of narcotics only known to be derived from American plants in ancient Egyptian mummies. These substances included South American cocaine from Erythroxylon and nicotine from Nicotiana tabacum. African skulls have been discovered at Olmec sites. Even more ancient African skeletons that clearly predate Columbus' arrival in the Americas were discovered throughout Central America and South America with some even being unearthed in what is now California. Columbus, as well as at least a dozen other explorers, including Vasco Nunez de Balboa noted the presence of '$#@!es' in the Americas. Contrary to popular thinking, Africa had a history and tradition of seafaring and had in fact master shipbuilders at one time. Images of shipbuilding and sailing dating back over 20,000 years old have been found in the Sahara (which at one time was not a desert) and the types of ships would have been able to cross what then would have been even less than 1,600 miles of ocean. The gigantic stone heads in Central Mexico depict what are clearly African faces. Furthermore, the cotton found in America is the same variety found in Africa.

We also know that Asians came to America across the Bering Strait and the Vikings made settlements in what is currently known as Newfoundland - all long before Columbus sailed in the wrong direction and found himself in the Caribbean. Just because European relative newcomers to the world of seafaring didn't have complete maps, doesn't mean that Columbus discovered America. In fact Chinese Admiral Zheng He circumnavigated the world and mapped the Americas in 1418. In 1421 he created a map of the world.

I think it does the existing cultures in the Americas an injustice to suggest that they didn't exist until they were 'discovered' by a European. It wasn't a new world, it was just new to the Europeans who couldn't wait to exploit it. However barbaric some of the cultures, the Conquistadors were hardly less barbaric in their treatment of the South American peoples they discovered in their avaricious quest for gold to support their culture of war. That was followed by all manner of Europeans who followed to take what they wanted by force, if necessary and then the mass migration of people who hated Europe so much, that they brought it with them. So yes, perhaps Columbus day should be renamed in honor of the people and cultures that disappeared as a result of Europe 'discovering' America.

First of all, Columbus did discover America. By "discover", historians do not mean he was the first to lay eyes on the Americas. What they mean is that his "discovery" was the only such discovery that is historically relevant because he communicated his discovery to the rest of the world. This was the beginning of truly global exchange networks. Yes, do know the Vikings settled Greenland and part of the Canadian coast but the Viking discovery is historically irrelevant. It makes for good reading. It's a great adventure story but is not comparable to the Columbian voyages because it was of no historical import.

Now that's the history. Now let's deal with the fantasy and amateurism. No, Africans did not sail to the Americas and there are no statues of black people anywhere in Central America. One would be wise to research what actual specialists think about these claims. No, there is no evidence that the Chinese ever discovered America despite what popular historian Gavin Menzies claims. Green Arrow was lauding his book a while back and I like Green Arrow so I broke the news gently to him: Menzies' work is deeply flawed. It's better than black Olmec statues but that's not saying much. Again, one would be wise to research what actual scholars think about such claims.
Whoever criticizes capitalism, while approving immigration, whose working class is its first victim, had better shut up. Whoever criticizes immigration, while remaining silent about capitalism, should do the same.

    Good riddance.
“Conscientiously believing that the proper condition of the negro is slavery, or a complete subjection to the white man, and entertaining the belief that the day is not distant when the old Union will be restored with slavery nationally declared to be the proper condition of all of African descent, and in view of the future harmony and progress of all the States of America, I have been induced to issue this address, so that there may be no misunderstanding in the future”
