    The Key to Change

It seems like everybody is talking about all the negativity, division, and hate going around this country. Ever since the 2016 election in particular it seems to have reached a fever pitch. Part of the problem is that so many of the people complaining about the division also help contribute to it.

The problem lies with us. As a people, we have allowed our differences to overcome our similarities and we have chosen to view those differences as weaknesses, rather than strength. We have allowed ourselves to be convinced that those different than us are evil. This is not the natural order, it is conditioning to keep us at each other’s throats in order to boost media ratings and keep elections competitive. Each of us has the puower to end the division and truly work toward changing our society and our world for the better, we just have to choose to do it.

I have reaffirmed my vow of nonviolence, and have also begun a vow to stop treating others negatively and instead spread positivity and light to the best of my ability. I am done being a part of the problem. It’s time to be part of the solution.

    That is a good plan.

As far as incivility goes I believe it started (slowly) in 2006 and gained steam since. 2016 was full blown incivility.

The same goes for media coverage and its cheer-leading for the democratic candidate.

Hallo Green Arrow! So good to see you posting again. You bring up a very good point. We can only control how we act and react. In the spirit of your post I will try and stick to what I can do to help elevate civility and not point to others or what I think has contributed to the cause of this incivility.

    Cheers my friend!

This is an admirable sentiment and I agree with it for the most part. However, I have to wonder if this sort of division can be solved or if it's inherent to the US political system. The "anti-federalists" (they weren't actually against federalism) argued that the US constitution would lead to factionalism and the endless power struggle engendered by the existence of factions. After over 200 years of data, I think it's safe to conclude that they were right and that the political "union" between the States was and is seriously flawed. That doesn't imply that a union between the States is categorically a bad idea, only that this particular version of the union needs to be reevaluated and reformed so that it reflects the underlying cultural reality of America. This would require more political autonomy at the State and local level and perhaps a redrawing of State boundaries.

P.S. - Great to see you again. This place is in desperate need of substance and honesty.
Power always thinks it has a great soul, and vast views, beyond the comprehension of the weak. And that it is doing God service when it is violating all His laws.
    --John Adams

Living your life by the Golden Rule is always a good idea. There will be people who perceive that as weakness and will not respond in kind. This is going to make it a challenge for you to stick by your vow. I wish you luck.

I agree. I had made a video about two years ago talking about everything you just said in your OP. I also made a thread not long ago with a similar message. I do not beilieve that there is an us and them. I do not even belive in democrat or republican. I believe that we are all human beings, and there is no separation between us. I dont even belive we are seperate from those who might hate us. Change does begin with us.

But there are those who are purposfully sowing division, and that is the reality that we find ourselves in. Yes we can sow seeds and we can change ourselves. But there really are groups as we speak purposfully sowing seeds of violence and hate. I am just being honest. I know that groups like that are a small majority, and even those people have a seed of goodness in their heart. I am aware of that. But it is getting tougher and tougher. I dont have a problem with it in the real world at all, but here in the forum it can be very difficult. The forum is very different from the real world.

We are all brothers and sisters in humanity. We are all made from the same dust of stars. We cannot be separated because all life is interconnected.
